the age old question cruiser or patrol

Post by zoook »

the old troopy 3 inches 35s has to go for many reasons , no back doors, too much overhang, petrol pig, no coils , too top heavy, no bucket seats to name a few .....keeping in mind the fact that my budget, misses, and brain wont let me spend a heap of cash on something i may smash a sill or quarter the first time i wheel it with the boys , i want more flex, less overhang and more power i hate a downshift on a hill on the freeway and that the misses wants back doors, and a bit of comfort and not to be dragging a caltex around and more power cause she also hates a downshift . im am looking at deisel coily wagon either 80 or GQ planned mods 4 inch lift 35s with a turbo and front locker hoping to acheive a pretty capable weekend wheeler that will tour if we want to. i want comparisons on wheel base, ease of mods you have my list, weight of the truck , power capability and reliability with the turbo on 1hz vs td42 what in your opinion will wheel better, what will tour better with my mods, strength of drive line and running gear ( the troopy is reliable and strong and i like it like that )
PS folks no flame war please try and keep it objective

either will do the job of what you want. Just go and see a few and test drive them because in the end it comes down to personal preference of the comfort and drivability, otherwise its a much of a muchness.

The Patrol does have a stronger driveline, the 80 series front diff is pretty much the same as a hilux's. othe rthan that it would be much of a muchness between the two

Strange that a 80 series front will fit a hilux if only the ratios are similar

Dont Hilux front diffs run backwards (wrong side of the gear teeth) and 80 series the correct way?

Get a 300Tdi disco or defender (1993-2000). More comfortable and more economical than any of your other options, and more comfortable stock. More flex stock as well.

Defender can fit 35s with a 1-2" spring lift. Both should be able to pull up most hills in 5th. Can be tweaked for more power with ease.

80 series are reverse cut. which means that they are stronger going forward (in the front) than "normal" diffs. but they are weaker in reverse... which is when most the load is on the front diff...

they are also high pinion... hilux are low pinion.

but crux of the matter is they are pretty much the same (size/materials/strength/bearings/spider gears etc)

you want more power but are going to a diesel. dont get me wrong i would too but the power will obviously not be great.

As mentioned above both will do the job, both are tough, the patrol probably slightly stronger drive line.

crusiers look more modern.

patrols are cheaper to buy and mod.

1hz is probably a better engine stock that a td42, but if turboing both i would be happier with the td42, personally. seen A 1hz not like its turbo, the td is a bit slower but very bomb proof.

cruisers are more comfy.

crusiers are full time and 10+ years old so backlash is common.

Personally I would go the patrol, cheaper (less scary to bend), easier to mod, a little tougher, less modern appearance but i like their look.

but for every me there is someone who prefers 80's.

We had a patrol (family car right through my teens) we toured and wheeled it and it was perfect.

but guess what - our travel companions had an 80, and they toured and wheeled that. both did the job, but they had more money .

The thing that sticks in my mind from your post was the budget and your (understandable) unwillingness to spend a huge amount of $$ on a car you might damage whilst enjoying it. So as a result, whilst I firmly believe the 80 series Yota to be a better "car", I would suggest to you that the GQ Patrol would be your best bet. They are cheaper, stronger in the driveline and replacement and mod parts are available everywhere for almost no money.

I agree with the two posts above, on a tight budget the GQ is the go. With a few grand of wiggle room it becomes neck-and-neck.
This is not legal advice.

x2

Can't fault my GQ other than the normal querks that they have. My mate has an 80 series (4.5P), and it definately is a better town/daily driver, however it isn't so crash hot in the bush.

The Patrols are definately a lot cheaper to build/mod/wheel, and there is never a shortage of parts!!

Get the best rust free GQ you can afford! 80 Diesel are too much $$$ and 1hz is no comparison to TD42

If you drive responsibly and enjoy 4wding the tough stuff with style and finess get a classic rangie!

If you like to crash and bash, get a patrol.

sorry i forgot you wanted a deisel toyota or patrol and the rangie is prob out of the equation. so just go the patrol!
