Russian military Jeeps. PORTAL AXLES !!!

Does anyone out there in Internet land have technical information on tha GAZ 69 and UAZ 469 Russian military Jeeps.There are thousands of these vehicles in Vietnam and I have noticed on several occaisions that some of each type(not many) are fitted with a type of reduction portal hub and very compact diffs. Due to the language barrier I was unable to communicate with the owners of those trucks to find out more about them. Bill.

I have seen a number of both the Gaz and Uaz, neither had any portals. Perhaphs it is ex-special forces or something like that...? I know that the Patrol (G60) was made and used in India from 1967-1999 (around 99). It was made in India for the military, design bought from Nissan. Any ways....point is there is very few G60's over there ex-military that were for the special forces. They came with a 4spd, dana 44's and a diesel motor. This being during the 70's and 80's. a G60 with this stuff can be found nowhere else unless it is custom.

Soooo.....it could be the same type of thing with the trucks you say.

I have a vague recollection of reading a Military Vehicles Of The World book about 25 odd years ago that the Mark ?? of the UAZ had modified axle for improved ground clearance. The ground clearance on the standard GAZ and UAZ aren't to bad anyway due to spring over and narrow profile "split diffs". The reduction hubs on the vehicles I saw in Nam did not have a big offset, maybe 3 inches or so and appeared to be of the pinion gear inside a ring gear type of construction.
