2.7Tdi hard to start when hot

Post by tritontray »

Hey,

My 2.7tdi is getting hard to start when it is hot (after running), e.g. drive from work to bakery near home (long enough for it to get to temp and run for 30mins) and turn it off while I get coffee. Then I jump back in and try and start it and it just ticks over but doesn't fire. Once it fires, it is instantly a bit rough and then runs fine. I guess it is getting a lot of diesel while I crank it over (thats why its rough when it finally fires), then it burns the excess fuel and runs fine.

So I was hoping someone may know why/what the problem is. could it be the injector pump, fuel pump, glow system etc etc. Did the 2.7tdi run fuel or inject pumps from other nissan diesels that have also had these problems starting?. One thing is though if I park it nose pointing downhill, it seems to start better. Maybe better feed from the fuel tank? Anyway if you haven't guessed I have no idea so any help is appreciated.

I have no real help for you but ....

Your problem sounds very much the same as the very common
hot starting problem on the RD2.8t.

battery

had the same issue with a terrano 2. Was the battery. Could also be the relay to the glow plugs. If it is worn then not enough power gets to the plugs and wont heat the diesel enough. Just an idea may be wrong..

Thansk for the reply. Battery is pretty much brand new. Can you describe where the glow relay is?

Nah keating wont be a glow plug issue cause the cars up to temp, only a factor on dead cold starts with glow plugs

i would suspect you are getting air in fuel. most likely injector pump seal is going. sometimes they don't open up until the pump warms up and then they suck a bit of air in and form a bubble in the pump when you stop.

worth checking if any air in fuel before the pump (clear bit of fuel line).

what injection pump is it? mechanical or electronic? electronic ones have a few bits which wear and cause a few problems.

I would get a diesel tech to look at it, is it direct injection or does it have precombustion chambers? somone here will know if you don't. How many Kms on the vehical? Could be pump timing, worn lift pump, seals leaking air into system, glow plug/s, leaky injector/s. The more info you can give us the easier it is to help you.

152000km, electronic fuel pump, injectors never done, although when I bought it, I had the #1injector changed as leaking, but as far as I know none of them are leaking, glows fine. 2000km ago when I serviced it because it was having trouble starting, I changed the fuel filter, which had started to fall apart internally and had bits of the filter floating through it. I changed the filter and the problem went away. This new filter is now 2000km old so I figured it had nothing to do with it. Maybe i should check it out again.
