greasing a hj60 ?

hi i havnt owned a 4x4 before this hj60 which i have only owned for a few weeks.i have got under the car and greased evrything except for the big front ball in the front suspension as i cant find a grease nipple?i did see a small square bung but i thought it should have a grease nipple on them?i know its a very basic question but i can find it.any info is a great help,thanks.
ps although im new to 4x4's i have been into cars all my life and own a valiant charger,ford landau hardtop and a vg hemi pacer and i have always worked on my own cars so im ok with tools etc.

the big ball i presume you mean the 'swivel housing' thats where the cv joints are. Sometimes also called a knuckle. Like any cv they are packed with grease. to do it properly you need to strip everything right down. hubs and all. The square plug you talk of is indeed the grease point, though it is rare that it will need greasing as it's fully sealed, and not exposed to the elements

Generally when you start to get runny oil/grease leaking at the knuckle it's time to strip it all down, clean and repack with new seals and gaskets. What happens there is the oil seal between the knuckle and axle housing goes and the diff oil washes out the grease and makes a really bad mess.

It's only 'fully sealed' by the felt ring on the back. Doesn't do much sealing if you play in the mud.

Go to a plumbing shop and get two brass 3/8bsp to 1/8 bsp reducers and 2 1/8 bsp grease nipples from a bearing shop. Replace the square bung with these and then you can pump grease into these knuckles when ever you want.

It is good to lock in the hubs (but not the transfer) and get it up to speed to through around the grease in the knuckle to get grease up to the top kin pin bearing.

I will be at Kingaroy on the 11th if you want me to bring a set of fittings for you.

If you play in the mud you should follow the 'severe condition schedule' which means checking and replacing if necessary the grease every 12 thousand k's. Personally i wouldn't normally stuff grease into the knuckle through that plug, simply because unlike a tailshaft or tierod the excess grease will likely go past the inner seal, or the knuckle seals making them useless. Plus it's not an effective way of greasing the cv.
At most i'd use the plug as a temporary bush fix if you were out and about and were sure that water/mud is inside the knuckle.

I think it would come out between the felt seal before the axle seal. It won't stuff up the axle seal anyway. They are stronger than that. I all ways put grease around the inside of the seal to help lubricate on the axle to stop wear on the axle shaft. Otherwise you will groove out the seal surface on the axle. Then ya F#@ked and up for a new axle on speedie sleeve it. I know of a few buggies (rock crawlers) that don't run inner axle seals and just fill up the knuckle with as much grease as possible and they don't leak oil. :D
