In my 91 Sahara the auto trans fluid routes through a trans cooler and through the bottom tank of the radiator. Is there an advantage to this? Reason I ask is that its two more hoses to take off the radiator and they're a real pain. I ended up cutting the ends tonight to get them off, so now I have to find new hoses.
I would have assumed the trans cooler would do the job, is the radiator simply there to get the fluid up to operating temps, and is this really needed in Australia/tropics?

If your external cooler is large enough to cool the oil it should be ok .
We set up an external cooler in the old man's 80 its one of them finned alloy cylinder types and we plumed it in after the pass through the original in the bottom rad tank as he tows a big van with a tinnie on the roof of the 80 .
We did it this way to scrub as much heat as posible from the oil as over heating the auto or running it hot for long periods shortens the life of the oil and the box

the reason it is there is to bring the trans up to operating temps quicker
