99 turbo D hilux keeps breaking gearboxs
hi, this year i have done 3 gearboxs in my hilux, it started after i screwed up the boost. i believe it is running 13lb boost and i have 33 inch tyres, a couple of people have told me that a non turbo box will never stand up to it. i have also had people tell me that it cant possibly have to much power 4 the box. can anyone help me out? ive herd of a bloke putting a dyna box behind a 3L and it working fine, i have found a 5 speed dyna box apparently in really good condition. is this conversion worth doing
Im running an R150F from a D4D lux in my truck (1KZ-TE + LN106 + 13psi + 285/75R16's) and its standing up fine.
I grenaded an R151F by putting my foot down in 5th on the freeway! Tore 5 teeth off the input gears!

2005 HDJ100 Manual, ARB bar, XD9000 winch, ARB rooftop tent + awning, Drawers, Engel, 2" OME lift, 285/75R16 KM2's, iCom, HID XGT's.
Not sure what box the Dyna runs (Search or Google should be able to help with that), but the 1st gear ratios (and probably 2nd gear as well) are different.
R150F has a 3.83 1st gear
R151F has a 4.31 1st gear
R150F has a 3.83 1st gear
R151F has a 4.31 1st gear

Is this Factory Turbo? Or a 5L with a Turbo kit fitted?devy09 wrote:hi, this year i have done 3 gearboxs in my hilux, it started after i screwed up the boost. i believe it is running 13lb boost and i have 33 inch tyres, a couple of people have told me that a non turbo box will never stand up to it. i have also had people tell me that it cant possibly have to much power 4 the box. can anyone help me out? ive herd of a bloke putting a dyna box behind a 3L and it working fine, i have found a 5 speed dyna box apparently in really good condition. is this conversion worth doing
Does anyone know if the 5L runs the G or R series box?
The Dyna box is no stronger than the R series Box. It just has a shorter first gear. The Dyna box is still an R series box.
What are you breaking in these boxes? 5th gear?
I take it you drive the truck hard?, What gear is it in/ what are you doing when it breaks?.
No g52s are not the strongest, imo you shouldn't break 3 in a year especially with a 3lt infront of it and 33inch tyres.
As has been said there is a few options out there some cheaper than others, some more worthwhile than others.
Its not the power that breaks box's and the 3lt doesnt have any , its torque, in saying that it should still hold up reasonably well, it depends alot imo in how the box was treated/maintained in the previous car it was in.
w56's, w58s are another option but the transfer would be chain driven unless you convert them.

If your breaking the G52 then its abuse thats doing it, I have a turbo 3L with 10psi, 33's and lockers and its neva missed a beat with sum serious abuse.
I recently swapped to a R150f from a surf to go with my turbo 3RZ swap, the R series are alot bigger and stronger then G's or W's but will still break if abused.
If you wanna put a R behind the diesel use a surf setup and bell.

I also was running a g52 box with a 3L at 11psi and had no problems, which regulary towed a 1 tonne boat long distances...
I now have a 2004 model 5Le motor and box (it is a stronger G52 as standard). This was put in my 1993 lux running 15lb boost and have had no problems and i regularly drive 600kms to a mine site and back....
Both get loaded up regularly with boat and ute full of stuff and i have never had problems....
Both were geared with 4.88's and with both 33's and 35's...
EDIT: thats over the last 6 years, not sure if i have been lucky but i drive my truck hard, it sits on 8psi min the whole way on the highway (low egt's)..

thats why i suggested ausi v6 box then u just need 3l bellhousing then from in side the cab its all the same

To use a v6 box you will need a LN130 2LT/2LT-E surf bellhousing.
As far as transfers go yes the surf does have electric 4wd activation, but so does any aussie IFS with a ADD front diff. You need to get gearbox/transfer from a model with factory free wheeling hubs.
best thing is to adapt a geardriven transfer to the back of an R series and u hav the best of both worlds.

I've got a 90 model ln106 with the G52, its in the process of a rebuild and want to put a turbo on it, but haven't heard many good things about that series box. so what im asking is what box have people used? can you still retain the gear driven transfer? if so is it as simple as unbolting the chain-driven transfer case off the R series box and bolting a gear driven one of a G series box? can someone please confirm that the chain driven one has a 23 spline input and gear driven has 21 spline and the bolt pattern is different? i've noticed that lowrange sell a v6 adapter kit.

would you still need the 23 spline input shaft they sell as well?
Thanks for any advice that anyone may be able to give.

1989 LN106- 2" spring lift, 285 mt117's, 4.8's, front spartan high pinion'd, 6000k H/L HID
They are not interchangeable at all.
The geardrives hav a 21 spline male input shaft where as the chaindrives are 23 spline female input shaft. You need to buy an adaptor and coupling to bolt a geardrive to R series.
I have a secondhand AA adapter for this purpose for sale if you are interested? has a 23/21 spline coupling so will suit a regular geardriven transfercase.
