i got a trutrac fitted in the rear of my hilux around 8 months ago, its done on road around 7000ks, prob 20 hours off road.. so not much

i want to compare my detroit cos everyone seems to kno how they are made and everyone recomends them but not that many people seem to have them.

as soon as i have got a wheel off the ground it jumps back to one wheel,, apply the brakes and it still wont engage, i can pop the clutch on it with the engine allmost redlineing and it wont engage(which is dangerous and ill brake somthing), my mates 60 lsd works alot better than my trutrac!!!, it is like a really crap lsd. on the road in the wet its lockd, but the wheels are on the ground!

can i get the preload tightened? would that make it tighter, i dont think they can be shimmed, coz they are gear driven not clutch, i understand diffs to a extent but im no way a expert...

I thought there was no pre-load on them. All they where was a multipler. About 3x or so.

Ie. one wheel in air = 3 x 0 = 0

But the braking should do it.

Handbrake an option? (I have smashed 2 diffs by using foot brake).

I should have said fluid or friction based LSD.

ie.

Most LSD's rely on friction and torque split reduces with slip.

Torsen is a true torque multiplier.

thanks dudes for answering my question and helping out, and argueing...
this is what i mean by everone knows how they work, but dont have one..
you have got to see it work to understand how frustrating it is to me. i ended up paying 1600 to get this piece of shit in,(coz the dumb c*nts fitted it with stuffed gears and told me it need new ones so they pulled itdown the next day to put new gears in,then charged me for both the pull downs and fittings) in theory it should work better than a lsd coz it "will always engage when a lsd will slip",says the owners manuel.

put it this way im so confident that it wont work i jacked my drivers wheel just of the ground, took off then clutched it and it did nothing.i hit the brakes when it was just sitting there and it did nothing.the helical gears just wont do their thing.

Can you repeat test with the handbrake?
(assuming a) it works and b) it's on the wheels, not tailshaft)

I'm wondering if brake bias on the fronts is stopping you.

the handbrake doesnt work(its a hilux) but with the brakes i did notice when i had the wheel off the ground that my brakes didnt pull the wheel up straight away or in a effective way, the brake pads are worn a bit so i guess that could contribute to them not stopping...but after watching a few of the our 4x4 vids my my lokka has always seemed to have not engage like a lsd should. opposite lock reckon it might have a spring loose or it wasnt fitted properly..RDP fitted it so dont go there!

Sounds like you really need to adjust up your rear brakes or find someone who can. They work sufficiently when properly adjusted at the rear wheels, even with semi worn shoes (unless the adjusters are on the limit). Also if it's lifted you need to make a bracket to raise the proportioning valve lever the same amount as your lift.

I had trutracs in the front and rear of my V8 4Runner and there is no question it is the best lsd out there, BUT it is an LSD not a locker.

The trutrac is a torque sensing diff, which basically means the more torque applied the more it will provide drive to a point.

If a wheel is lifted and massive rpm's applied as you mentioned it will free spin just like any other lsd. You have to apply rpm's slowly so torque is applied to get it to work.

For instance, if your engine requires lots of rpm's to get keep you moving etc a trutrac will not be of any great use as its requires slow building torque not instant massive rpm's.

With the slow rpm V8 torque is was easy to have it one wheel drive, HOWEVER it is still only an lsd and at some point will free spin if the rpm's exceed a certain level. They work much better with auto's as you can apply braking at the same time as some gas.

I now have fitted an Electrac to the rear as I was super impressed with the trutracs lsd capabilities but now I can also fully lock it when needed :D

It's hard to say if yours maybe defective in some way as I would think you would hear it if somethng was wrong inside :D.

Otherwise, finding a switchback and trying various braking methods to learn what it requires etc might prove beneficial for next time but remember it's an lsd not a locker :D.

This is how helical gear LSDs work. One wheel in the air = no drive. You need to create a resistance at the wheel in the air so that the torque multiplication can work - such as

It's gotta be the handbrake. Apply a load to the wheel in the air, and the torque multiplier will send MORE torque to the wheel on the ground. But, if you're using the foot brake, the front brakes are probably creating more resistance than the driving torque is able to overcome.

Use the handbrake (presuming it works on the rear wheels) to send torque to the rear wheel on the ground, and the (unbraked) fronts should do some work for you too.

If you have a transmission handbrake you're screwed.

thanks ozrunner, finally someone who has owned one. ill have a crack at slow building torque and we will see how it goes..
