Commodore Alternator upgrade

Post by DIRTY ROCK STAR »

Hey guys,

looking to upgrade my alternator in comp rig.
its a stock V8 Commodore VN alternator.
Anyone know a good cheap supplier of such an off the shelf upgraded item?

Stock one seems to really struggle winching and with lights etc.

trying to get some stuff sorted so its less of a drama to use.

Cheers

i am putting a vn 5l into my hilux and used a petrol landcruiser one from a 1FZ 100 series.
minor mod to fit to original holden bracket and is 100 odd amps std. uprated holden ones are only about 85 amps and bloody expensive......
Keep it shiny side up!

A VT Calais V8 (5.0) alternator is 125amps.

You can by the correct bosch pulley to bolt it to vee belt drives from Bursons if you quote them the Pt # which I can get if you think 125A will be enough, other wise should be a straight swap in.

I think 125A would be enough. or atleast a decent upgrade from the standard 85A.

Ive found new 120amp alternator.
but a mate got a 170Amp.
but they cant find them for me anymore.
but Ingrams have a 120A so sounds like that may have to do. still a decent step up from 85A. and its bolt on so means i will be able to change with my spare stock alternator with no dramas.

unless anyone finds a better idea soon?

cheers

From a guy who just did it on the Surf site,

Instead of having to change the Vt 120 amp to an older less amp alternator due to the VT serpentine belt

i found a few things out from Bosch
Standard VT Alt part number is BXH 1253A , with serpentine pulley
The Bosch part number for the V pulley to suit is F005 A1 0064

Time will tell if its going to work ok, just have to wait till i get to the stage of start putting the bolts on back and see if all lines up ok, the V belt pulley seems to sit a few mm flatter than the serpentine one, i think i read struth you had to machine your bracket down a bit, i might get away without having to do that

Go to a holden parts shop and get a VS V8 series 3 police pack alternator. Same 120 amp as the VT but comes with the V belt pulley. I have one on my VN V8, had to trim a little off the bracket though but that's no biggy.
