second gear issues

Post by 4wd_pig »

.i have a maverick/patrol 4.2 diesel. whenever i go to select second gear it grinds and clunks into second gear. every other gear is fine. ive been told to use ATF in my manual box because it is a lighter fluid. will this do any damage to the box or car?

You can use a mixture of g/b and AFT, but i wouldn't go to full ATF. If the rest of your gears select fine, then its most likely that your second gear synchro ring is flogged and needs replacing.

Tried double-clutching?

Try to keep away from ATF its way too thin.
As coxy says check syncro rings for damage'

its a big gearbox that needs a bit of warming up before you start pullin 'Schumacher gear shifts'. (especially in a NZ winter)

the oil I have found to work well is the semi synthetic 75w/90 with 25% additive for heavy towing.

when cold....I just get it rolling in 1st then 'short shift' to second. there will be less teeth on the drain plug!
