80 series sub tank woes

Howdy,

Can any 80 series experts help me out a bit? I just picked up a HZJ80 on the weekend and can't seem to get the sub tank pumping fuel over and the fuel tank warning lamp is on the dash constantly. The switch on the dash does nothing and doesn't light up when pushed. If there is a pump there i can't hear it working. So I'm wondering if there is a fuse somewhere i can't find. I've checked all fuses and they seem OK but I can't find the particular one that controls any fuel circuit.

There is a fuel transfer solenoid up above the rear diff, it is quite common for these to die as they are exposed to all manner of mud, rocks, water etc.

The wiring loom exits under the rear passenger seat so 1st step is to check to make sure this isnt damaged, then check your getting power to the changeover solenoid, then go through the joy of lying on your back and pulling the solenoid out and testing it.

Brake line clamps should stop most of the fuel from dribbling down your arm. By giving the solenoid +12v you should be able to hear/feel it clicking, it may just need a bit of a tap and clean to get it going again. A new solenoid is about $250 trade from toyota IIRC, or you could chance one from a wrecker.

HZJ is diesel right?

Diesels dont pump over like the petrol.. u either draw from the main or the sub, but the fact ur light is on there must still be some sort of issue

my mistake sorry- I'm only new to cruisers but it's the 4.5 petrol RV if that makes a difference.

yes it definitely makes a difference. The petrol and diesel cruisers use different systems.

Im not familiar with the petrol 80s but the diesel ones have a fuse box and relays etc under the bonnet as well as in the cab. Have you checked both?

the 4.5's have a control module in the rear passanger side panel for the pump. they can be a bit susceptible to water as they tend to leak around the window/vent....

there is a pump mounted up high in between the 2 tanks..

start at the pump and check/wd40 all the connections, if that doesnt fix it pull that panel off and make sure the contorl module isnt wet/damaged...

btw 4.5's are FZJ

finding a good control module can be a mission too... mine still doesnt work, the 80 donation car for my comp truck had some extra wires added to it to bypass the module and work from a seperate switch on the dash to get the pumps to transfer between tanks

I traded it about 2 weeks ago, the fuel light issue has been an intermittent fault for a while. I have already swapped the control module in the rear inner guard with a working one from a mate didn't fix it, possibly fault in solenoid or transfer pump.
Does the air cond work?
Which car yard ended up selling it?

If you want a bit of a history one the car let me know.
