g,day everyone,
just considering putting a slightly larger rad in my 84 turbo rocky and pissing off the fan to run a large thermo instead, this all came about after i want away about 2 weeks ago camping car was full had trailer on with bike an stuff in trailer also, car pulled it fine no worry's could sit on 100kms but about lunch time when the weather got hot so did the rocky, it usually sits just under half driving around normally, but after driving up some long hills constantly on boost (9psi intercooled) it started to get hot an stay hot it was coming up over half and once reached three quarters, and it took awhile before it started to come back down, the next day i check the water levels and everything was fine,
the motor is near new with new thermostat and new hose's and new fan with shroud, the diesel pump has been opened slightly so its pumping slightly more fuel but nothing major.
next im just going to get rid of the standard fan and replace it with a large thematic fan probably leave the shroud and see how that goes,

GETIN HOT ANYONE REPLACED THERE ROCKY RAD AND PUT THERMO ON?

I haven't tried this before but I don't believe it would help.
Most large thermo fans will still move less air than the engine driven fan.
If your engine driven fan has a thermo clutch on it, that may be causing your problem.
My 92TDI rocky also gets hot if you push it up a hill in hot weather and the cooling system is in good condition. My solution is to drop down a gear and dont push it as hard. It works well and its cheap...
At the moment I'm considering buying a second clutch for my fan and welding it up so it doesn't slip anymore. I will then use this as a "summer" fitment. In winter I will revert back to the standard clutch fan. Should be a half hour job at the beginning and end of the season to change it over.

yea cheers, i know that the fixed fan the standard one, should have been sitting closer to the rad when it was designed cuz if u look it sits to far away i think,
its not really that im pushing it so hard but even sitting on 100kms on a straight rd it shouldn't get hot then thats my main worry, i think having the aircon spot lights and winch doesn't help much, i may put a slightly larger rad in witch will move it closer to the fan anyway an c how that goes, thanks for the help,
