Where is the tail light relay , FJ75SWB

Cheers, A mate has no tail lights on his FJ75SWB but has brake lights. He says he has double checked all his fuses and they are OK. I thought the relay was near the aircon vent on left side of dash near the door but it seems there are two other relays there. Can you tell us where the tail light relay is on the SWB75 please. regards

Not sure about the relay mate but just letting you know
the swb is the fj70 and the mwb is the fj73 and the ute and troopys are fj75's

Yes you are right for sure I should have picked that up myself being a short wheel base with FRP top.
I have a HJ75 but it is ages since I have been in the dash and I thought the relay was behind Left hand side air vent in dash, but apparently not. Maybe right side or under steering wheel area. he has no tail lights so he cant drive early or after dark. Has brake lights and indicators.

Not sure exactly what year/model/etc. it is, as you would probably need the exact factory electrical manual for it, but in the manual for my model from I think 92 onwards...


The tail light relay is in a relay block on the side of the steering column.

The tail light relay feeds the TAIL fuse, which then feeds the tail lights, along with various illumination lights.

Are the illumination lights in things like the license plate light, the dash meter lights, the heater and radio lights, various back lit switches, etc., coming on with the lights as per normal?

Are the front white marker/parking lights coming on as per normal?

If they are, then it might be the globes in the tail lights, or the wiring to them.

If they are not, then first double check the TAIL fuse, maybe checking with a test probe or volt/multi-meter for voltage to either side of the fuse when the lights are turned on.

If no voltage at the fuse, then yes, check the relay for voltage from the battery, and for control voltage from the light switch circuit.

Yes,
Checked all the fuses with a test light. Nothing blown.
Looking at a wiring diag, I know there is a tail light relay, I just cant find it!

It is an '84 FJ 75 short wheel base FRP model.

Not that it should matter for a relay, but if it has a factory, unmodified FRP top, it is a mid wheel base not a shorty, so it is a (very early) FJ73

Thanks Pete, Mate I am not familiar with the short and mid wheel base cruisers. I have always had ute's and one wagon + a RR wagon. Just went by what my mate said but thanks again for your help.
