Hi all.
i have a 91 model GQ with turbo TD42. it is currently running a bigger injector pump and axt turbo running 18 psi. It's got about 180hp. im looking at putting an intercooler on but have no idea about them.
Ive been looking at some universal intercooler's on ebay.

and top mount vs front mount has been argued about heaps , generally they say top mount suffers from heat soak and front mount causes overheating dramas but both these problems can be over come
i like top mount as there is less pipeing and i overcome the heat soak by fitting a shrowd under it with a thermo fan , the top of the intercooler is sealed against the bonnet so no hot air from the engine bay can enter the intercooler , but space is very tight and a body lift would be handy , front mount has a lot of pipeing and the intercooler itself will have an effect on air flow through the radiator but many dont have any issues with overheating but some still do
there is also a water to air intercooler , similar to front mount it has its draw backs with extra piping etc but again , many get good results
basicly you have to choose one and get it to work well with your motor

my plan is to get the universal front mount cooler and mount it as a top mount. is this an option? i was planning to get a big bonnet scoop to get the air in and have a small thermo fan with shrouds etc.
i am running a warn high mount with a cheezy bar and i think the airflow won't be enough to get full advantage of the intercooler. i would also have to do a bit of modding to fit pipes etc for a front mount.

yes you can fit a front mount as a top mount but the one you have a link to probly wont fit without some piping mods and maybe a body lift
this is mine which is 280 ish wide and i think 550 long( at the core ) and it barely fits in as the intake to the manifold gets in the way and on mine the turbo is on the other side , basicly its the only way it would fit

What about a laminova set up. Around the $1500 they seem to be working quite well lots of info on them. Just type in laminova in the search function.

Maybe it was $1500 for the cooler itself?. If so you still need a large heat exchanger, pump, thermo's,water lines, fittings etc. It would quickly add up. I have a 6x10 PWR unit in mine, its working well but i need a bigger heat exchanger.
If you want to do it on a budget i would get a frozen boost cooler and heat exchanger but get a bosch pump and better thermo's.

Then I posted on outers regarding these, and a bloke pointed me to the FBoost ones as a serious option (I always *thought* they were massively overpriced - shows how wrong you can be)..
So I started lookin further into them, at pricing and shipping etc. They dont look too bad as a complete kit price wise. <$1000au complete and landed for a 650hp kit!!
So, my question is, anyone played with them? Or ordered the kit?

as I see you are in woodford, talk to the guys at northside 4x4 in caboolture.
They make their own kits up using good quality components. Their cores are from the states, their radiators are PWR items, they use bosch pumps and the rest is fabricated on site or locally.
I can't find any pics on their site but go and see them. They'll have some photos etc on display and quite often there will be one on a car for you to look at. Their kit is for the GU but they have adapted it to the GQ, you will need a GU airbox.
The retail for a GU is $3500ish fitted last I checked. So a little more expensive than some of the kits you can buy off ebay etc. but that includes having leon tune it on the dyno, he's the best TD42 tuner I've ever met, and it's all covered under their warranty then.
Their setup is hands down one of the best intercooler kits around.

Thanks for the tips Anzac. Anywhere else to go rather than Northside. They have wasted my time and nearly every body elses time that i no of. One to many run ins with them. But i do give credit to some of there workers in the work shop. They no wat there doing.

yeah, they have some issues there, especially at the moment with a number of staff leaving etc.

running a big frount mount on mine. 800x400x100.
didn't find any rise in running temp if anything its better. if going frount mount make sure you fit as thick a core as possible otherwise yes you can loose alot of boost.
snorkel and a retune would be a must, just makes for a happier running car with the frount mount set up
