Depends what alt you have.?

Only about 40 differnt IR codes out there.

Common terminals are

S - Sense 12v
IG - ignition
L - Light
D - Dummy
P - Stator
N - Neutral

The one on the big nut or terminal goes to the battery
The small nut may have a lead to ground or a filter etc.
There may be another thin wire that goes to the alt light.
There may be another lead that goes to the fuse box or ign as a voltage sensing lead.

You will need to supply more info thatn what you have, how long is a bit of string if its painted blue??
