why oh god why would you want to step back wards!!!

they have smaller gearboxes than the 4.2!!!

better off saving extra money and getting a td42t.

you would have to change engine mounts etc etc for the 2.8 as well affaik

NOOOOOO!!!!!! Trust me you dont want to put a 2.8td in it after re-building mine twice within 80.000km it went BANG again last week for the 3rd time and im now putting a V8 in to it .
Not even going to offer the 2.8 as a boat anchor

Going backwards like that would be a crazy thing to do

Just my two cents worth anyway..

Also, what he and boggedy said! You'd be better of (and WAY cheaper!!) to rebuild the TB42. If you want a diesel, go a TD42T, they CAN be auto I think (asked bogged, I'm sure that's what he had/has).

Why does no one answer his question and just pour shit on the 2.8 instead?

I had a 2.8 and it had 240,000 kms on it when I sold it, and it never missed a beat.

I own a 2001 GU with a ZD30, so I hear what you're saying; I've never had any dramas with mine and have a list of mods that (hopefully) grenade proof it.

That said, I would counsel someone AGAINST removing a TB42 and installing a ZD30, PARTICULARLY when the conversion will include changing the gearbox etc! For the same cost, or amybe a LITTLE bit more, he could get one the truly reliable motors on the modern 4x4 scene, TD42/TD42T.

i agree the td42 would be alot better im just saying that theres nothing wrong with the 2.8 but and the end of the day most of the time its easier and sometimes cheaper to just sell the car and buy one with the motor you want in it
