G'day,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience fitting 255/85/R16 BFG Muddies to 6 inch wide rims. The BFG chart says 6.5 is the minimum rim width, but i've heard 6 inches can be done. Is it safe? Would you need flares for a GQ Patrol then?

Also is it recommended to source rims wider than 8 inches for 33/12.5/r1r's even if your not going to drop the pressures much?

take them to a kmart tyre and auto store and pay the slacker to fit it they will do anything they fitted 7" wide formular ford tyres on 5" wide rims and then fitted the tyres and rims to my cortina the tyres are race only and have not for highway use printed on them

I got one on a split rim for a spare and it seems ok and dont think you'd need flares and 8inch rims would be just rite for a 33X12.5.
80 series, Locked both ends, Q78ed & a massive 57 k/w to boot!!!!

i have 235/75R15 tyres on a 5.5inch rim

according to BFGoodrich it is a no no but they handle fine :cool:

7" rims

The manufacturer usually has a pretty good idea about their required wheel size. Fiting a tyre to a too narrow rim can cause the bead to not seat properly. Then you come hammering into a corner a load up the outside of the tyre, off it comes... well I wouldn't want to be coming the other way. And then the accident investigation mob finds a too narrow rim, and your insurance company says....

The supplier SHOULD refuse to fit them - it's a liability thing.

Buy some 7's, although I would've thought a 255/85 required an 8"

Overall I agree that manufacturer guidelines make a lot of sense to follow - BUT a range of times you really have to ask if they really know what they are talking about.....
Firstly, since generally rims aren't 6.5, 7.5 or 8.5....so WTF don't they say the minimum is 7,8, or 9...etc :?
I can also think of other instances where manufacturers put out specs that are berwildering (eg many towing limits) and heck it's not uncommon for them to make mistakes (eg I have identified a few areas where my FSM is plan wrong).....

Back to the tyre/rim combo 7 my thoughts....I think the question has been answered above ;)
