they were an option on the 80 series. They were quite common in the united states, however not so in Australia.

The ones I've seen with them have been sahara spec 80's, i'm not sure it was an option on the gxl, letalone a standard/dx

They are electrically actuated, like the center diff lock, so fitting them means you need the entire front and/or rear axle housing assembly as well as the wiring loom, control relay, switch and any other little things i don't know about.

Cost would be astronomical, and makes arb lockers seem cheap. You'd probably have to look over seas too. Although sahara spec 80s do pop up every now and then if you wanted to trade in, upgrade and save hassles. Of course every now and then might be lucky to be once a year.

complete second hand factory locked diffs sell for not much less than ARB lockers.
They work very well in my opinion, mine have never failed to work when needed.

to buy them new from Toyota would be hella expensive.

you can retro fit the locked centres into a standard housing, BUT modifications need to be done to the housing and axles need to be changed. you also need wiring harnesses, switches and a ECU/control module.

it is less work to fit ARB locks
