18R on 3

Post by GM »

I am mucking around with a 18R in my daughters camper van. It is running on 3 cylinders at the moment. I have replaced the spark plugs, leads, dissy cap, rotor, adjusted the tappets and done a compression test on the motor.
No 1 . 130lb
No 2 . 130lb
No 3 . 110lb
NO 4 . 90LB
Guess which one is not firing, No 1
The points have been replaced with a Petronics electronic thing in the distributor where the points go. I am not familiar with these.
I am unable to find the timing marks so its only timed by ear. I took it to the extremes both advanced and retarded and it made no difference to the miss
The car runs on gas and petrol.
There is spark, fuel and compression but no bang.
Any clues would be great

Something to try.Check you havnt got a dirty big vacuum leak.Look at the vacuum hoses running off No1 on the manifold first.Using some plyers clamp them shut one by one. Then try spraying some carby cleaner around the manifold gasket and carby base gaskets and see if it flares up.How did spark plug colours compare? Are there any bubbles in Radiator or over heating issues as that could also be possible head or head gasket prob. That No4 four aint looking too pretty for the future either hey.

Thats interesting you say that as the old dizzy cap was 180 deg out so the notch on the front of the cap was not engaging in the lug so the cap could be moved . I installed the new cap so the locator sat in place and the cylinder numbers on the cap worked. Is there a trick here????

Plugs were not pretty. 3 & 4 were the worst as you would expect. 1 was not too bad and 2 is running fine. There are no bubbles in radiator , and oil is fine. I did a vacuum test by removing a vacuum hose and it made a big difference so I assumed there was no problem there? I will try the spray test tomorrow but I have already looked for a manifold leak

It seems that someone has been fiddling with the dizzy before you got to it. Suspect they've stuffed up. I think the distributor is in the wrong position. You will have to find the timing marks or better still find TDC on number 1 with the valves closed (compression stroke) and remove the whole distributor, then reinsert it in the correct position. my 2c :D
