SWB GQ wheelbase extion ideas
Gday guys,
Just toying with ideas at the moment, but tech and pics would be great....
My shorty GQ is quite capable as it is, but im starting to think about getting the rear diff back abit whilst retaining the body of the swb.
Cutting the guards out obviously, and removing the fuel tank from that location are obvious.
Cutting off the rear body mounts and fabbing something else to go in its place is also needed.....
GQ suspension works fine in the rear end, so im concidering simply cutting my panhard mount off the chassis and cutting the coil mounts off the chassis and re welding them further back, then simply extending all the links and drive shaft......
Is this going to work? I mean suspension geometry wise.... can you simple throw the diff back and make the links longer without adversly affecting the way the rear suspension works???
any pics or tech of ppl that may have done this would be good.... Id definately retain the body work at this stage.

i was going to try welding another set of coil mounts on the chassis.
swap left for right and put them at the rear of the chassis curve instead of the front then just extend the arms to fit.
that way i could put it back if necessary.

Pretty sure most just move or make new coil mounts further back. Superior may even sell them.
I would leave the chassi mounts for the links where they are and just make hte arms longer. This should remove some of the bump steer that Patrols with lift have.
Should make the rear suspension more controlled both at speed and climbing hills.
Also the there shouldn't be any need to change the body mounts. If you where to add to the chassi. I think that would just be a head fark trying to get the body back on. As the chassi is now longer.
Look for pics of some of the winch challenge MWB GQ's. Most are a std body with the wheel archs/tubs moved backwards.
For the fuel tank. Run a belly tank (std AUX) and the fuel filler just behind the B pillar.

You could always add sway bars to get it to drive a little better but I think you will find that they perform well. And I am sure an engineer will pass it. It depends on the size tyres you want to run and how far back you move the diff. You can leave the body mounts if you only run 35's and only move it back 6 inches. Is there a standard aux tank for a shorty or does the LWB one fit? I was considering doing this but thought you would have to make a custom fuel tank. With a petrol it is easier as you can just run them on gas and put the tank in the rear.

my 2 cents...... you could go coilovers in rear and move panhard chassis mount rearward to suit extension and run a long arm 4 link set up i cut a rear control arm to look at sleeving and lengthining it and i think it certainley can be done we are modding them as spares for comps and as a cheaper (maybe) option link on our new build comin soon . any way great idea screwy hope you work it out , keep thinking outside the square mate cause inside is boring , keep us posted ,

Fuel tank wise i have a sub tank in the shed that sits up next to the driveshaft.... short of that i was going to run a fuel cell.....
Ive done this sort of shit before. The whole project isnt that hard... its only making the panel work pretty afterwards thats a nucence....
as far as using a wagon to shorten..... yeh i can do that, but a wagon body doesnt look as nice cut as a shorty due to the rear doors and also its the same way everyone does it, and i like to try new things.......
Also my current shorty is extremely capable for what it is and is fully engineered. The only thing that lets it down is the rear diff needing to go back abit.....
im better off using the base i have and just adding a wheelbase mod to my regoed engineered truck, then starting from scratch...
