dual battery for GQ, Battery position ?

Post by bagsy »

hey guys Im trying to install a duel battery sytem for my GQ wagon. Its a petrol efi and theres not much room under the bonnet. Ive been told that i can only fit a small 8 inch battery but I reckon i need more juice that that for the winch. Any thoughts or previous experiances would be greatly appreciated. shane.....

Battery location

Baggsy I fitted mine on top of the LH gaurd, not efi though. Have seen the smaller batteries fitted to the lhs against the firewall. My bracket fits around the overflow bottle, and the battery sits almost touching the overflow bottle. Had to remove the conical pre cleaner and re route the air intake. Not familiar enough with the efi set up to say if this will work for you though.

A mate of mine has a SWB GQ early petrol that has the works but is selling it after he takes all the good bits. He has bought a newer GQWagon with EFI Petrol motor and is using the same battery tray, which was a diesel one. He had to move the gas mixer, coil and some other stuff, (can find out if you want) but reckons he's seen it done before and you can get a 600CCA battery in the front just like the diesel counterpart

I have a 95 GQ RX wagon EFI. Back right hand corner of the engine bay fits a standard car battery ( biggest number of plates I could get )that powers my winch fine.
Battery tray is a piranha copy and the battery fits up snug to the Aircon lines.
Carby and diesel GQ's can fit a larger battery over the passenger wheel arch.

cheers

hey troll, yep thats where ive been told to fit the battery aswell. Just wondering what battery you used, you said a standard car battery . Is that an 8 inch one and is it a deep cycle. Thanks shane,,,,

hey myttuf, any info on that mate of yours would be cool. As i would rather use a big 650 cca battery. But all the air box and the snorkle intake is in the front corner ,so it only leaves the back right corner...
Thanks in advance shane......

I'll have a look on the weekend as I'm not wheeling (wife's 30th B/Day  ) and I'll try and get some photos if I'm lucky.

Run your winch off the main battery. Starting batts winch better.
Use the 2nd batt for accessories or to jump off if main goes flat.

Bagsy, I had a 92 EFI with gas conversion. Gas mixer was near passenger side firewall. Removed the air cleaner box and flexible hose, replaced it with a 89 mav diesel precleaner behind left headlight running a unifilter foam filter. Used the original 90 degree bend into old airbox, on precleaner facing upwards from the bottom. Truck radiator hose from 90 degree bend to air sensor. Used a nissan 200x adaptor for the air sensor bit ( it was mounted on old air box), from autobarn about $25. From air sensor to original hose ran a piece of truck radiator hose ( same size as before )as both ends have slightly different diameters. Had to move the charcoal canister from behind headlight, and I also mounted coil on the opposite side of the original mount to clear the battery carrier. This setup used the ARB battery carrier over the overflow bottle like davejb was describing. I had a 750cca and it was hooked upto a safari snorkel. Used it for 2 years without any dramas.

Bagsy
Sorry for the late reply. Went out to play.
Mines a standard car battery out of a El Fairmont ( the wife's...ssshhh)
No dramas so far except keep busting battery tray clamps. runs the engel and all accessories, plus the winch. Have a solenoid to switch in the main if winching really needs a lot of herbs.
Don't know what CCA it is , but its the biggest I could get to fit and just happened to be just sitting in the drive way so it was at the right price.
