question for the guru's - mwb bj73/bundera

Post by madbunyip »

Hi all, just a few questions for all the toyota guru's, and can never get the search option to work

basicly I'm looking at buying either a swb bundera or a mwb FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) landcruiser

1st: what running gear is in the swb bundera's?? is more like hilux or landcruiser?? - I know they only come out with 4cl petrol or desiel - LX model coil sprung - I'm looking at a sweet one thats got a 5lt V8 auto - are the transfer box's and diffs strong enough??- I know landcruiser running gear wont have a problem but I know nothing about hilux running gear??

2nd: BJ73 mwb is the factory 3.4lt turbo desiel the 13bt that are known for reliabilty and longevity - and again what running gear?? hilux or cruiser ??
any info on thses model's would be much appreciated

(p.s mind the spelling:)
Cheers Toby :?: ;)

Bundera is hilux running gear, smaller gearbox and engine and they run 8'' diffs with the rear being a semi floater, they all ride on coil springs.

The V8 auto one your looking at, what auto is it? I think bundys ran a landcruiser split transfer case but I am not sure.

BJ73 is a 3B non turbo diesel, BJ74 (what I have) is a factory 13BT turbo diesel. They run all full size landcruiser running gear pretty much the same as a troopy and 60 series cruisers, 9.5'' diffs front and rear, larger gearboxes, full float axels. 13BT is in the same family of motors used in many trucks, Dihatsu Delta, Toyota Dyna and some Hino's they are solid and reliable while being pretty bloody fuel efficient too.

cheers - the Bundy I'm looking at has the injected holden 5ltr with turbo 700 auto - are the 8" hilux diffs strong enough ???
the BJ74 is looking better now I know is cruiser gear as i still have my 60 with all the parts - the BJ has the diesel gas installed properly by d gas systems so would be efficient- I'm leaning more towards the BJ74 but I will be towing a small camper how do the 13bt go with a bit of load ??

Some stuff will swap between your 60 and a BJ74, ie diffs, 5spd gearbox internals and transfer (input shaft is different though) rear springs etc. I havent really towed with mine.

The only towing experience I have is towing a Patrol on a hilly highway.

I recently was flat towing my mates car behind my BJ74, I am running 35'' tyres, H55F and 4.11 diffs, weight around 2600kg ish towing a 3000kgish Nissan patrol up some long moderate hills. Boosting 10psi by 2000rpm, hitting 13.5psi at 3000rpm. Pyro post turbo between 450C-520C using mostly 3rd and 4th gears, crusing up most grades in 4th at 2100rpm. Was very pleased with how easily it towed the weight.

Exhaust and fueling are stock as far as I know, with only the muffler removed from the stock exhaust.

Was hitting upto 90-100kmh

Since you were considering a shortie (Bundera) as well as the middie, you could also consider a short wheel base Landcruiser. These were the BJ70, which had the 3B and the BJ71 which had the 13BT. I don't think they sold the BJ71 in Australia but there are a couple around as grey imports. Also the FJ70 and FJ73 were the petrol versions. If you enjoy doing wheel stands put a rear locker in any of these models. :D

Now what would the advantage be of doing this over a midi? Less space, less stability same driveline, not coils.

No advantage - just that he was considering a Bundera as well as a midi. The shorties are about 170 kg lighter so they would go a bit better and would be a bit more manouverable in tighter spots. But a midi would be a better compromise probably with the 2.6m wheelbase compared with the 2.3m.
