gun safe on truck

just after ideas how everyone secures their guns when transporting them?
i was thinkin a slide out draw from under the tray but not 100% sure.

Hi,

You are legally allowed to transport fire arms as long as they are secure, in a case as well leather, drag bag or ally and not free to move about. Most of the guys I know just have them either on the floor in the back of the car or behind the seat of a ute.
The cops are happy when you get pulled over as long as you declare them if they are snooping around for what ever reason.

Agree with the above regarding storage behind seat and declaration if about to be searched. Would add also that the bolt needs to either be out of the action or open, and the ammo stored in a locked container. If the bolt is closed, the firearm is considered loaded, which you are not allowed to have whilst transporting. I got pulled up on the closed bolt issue, but the copper was fine about it and didn't fine me as the ammo was locked up, but something to remember.

How big are your guns? I always carry mine in bags behind the seat, even on a long trip, just lock the ute up if you stop at the servo or if you are getting something to eat. If I'm just going to the range they are usually on the front seat.

I would think that if you dont know the laws pertaining to firearms and their their safe storage then you probably shouldnt have one ..

Number one rule when having firearms in a car .. dont be a wanker and advertise with a huge Browning or Winchester sticker etc on your window and your swag stowed in the back .. your just asking for trouble !!

The only wording is that you must provide safe storage during transit.
Mine travel behind the seats of the ute in a drag bag. With a velcro strap to stop them sliding around.
Ammunition and bolts are locked in the glovebox, or in a toolbox on the tray.

Don't leave the car unlocked and unattended and you're basically good to go.


As mentioned, if you have your car plastered with a million weatherby/winchester/etc stickers and your firearms are stolen from within, expect a reaming by the firearms registry when it gets investigated.

You may also find that rules change from state to state and also I think the police/authorities may take a dim view if your not heading for a range or the property/properties you are approved to shoot at. As has been said, the car must be locked if you move away from it... in fact in Qld now it must be locked if you are more than 3 metres away from it, this is even WITHOUT a firearm inside.

ohk thanks guys ill probably just dismantle them and put them behind the seat or in my toolbox which is lockable.

You just look like another tradie ute.

Dont plaster it in browning, winchester etc stickers.

Try Aluminium, Poly or Fiberglass cases.
Any good gun shop will have a range of types/sizes
They are lockable and great protection for your firearm, much better than a soft bag.
Have had a set of Stmford cases that have lasted over 30 years now, worth every cent that I paid for them way back then.
AND when you do get pulled over by the coppers its easy to point to them, tell them what they are and that they are locked - never been a problem, just a qwik check of the licence, a qwik description of the guns for them and all good.

I have had a winchester sticker on nearly all of my vehicles over the years and am always out shooting with no problems, whats your point?
So a fisherman with a Shimano sticker is a wanker too
I suppose the local builders with a Makita sticker on the tray are also wankers
