Looking at replacing my lowmount winch with a Warn hi-mount.
Just want to know which is the better unit? The 8074 or the 8274?
Are both able to be upgraded, motor and drum.
I will be upgrading to at least a 6hp motor maybe a 7.6 if I can get one at the right price.

I sort of figured the 8074 would be an older model but is it weaker?
Is it different?
Can I use all the upgrade bits available for 8274 on a 8074?

8024 does not have free spool, ie no pull leaver on top hat. Otherwise same strength. Just older.

Cheers.. I want to fit an air free spool so that rules out the 8074 unless it can be retrofitted?

That depends if you are running an air free spool that is just an actuator on the 8274 lever, leaving the gearbox still running with the drum, or go for a drum disconnect.
I run the older style and find it great, both on my old zuk and now on my gu.

Ring Dave Metcalfe to find out any info. You need to find out whether the little cog can be changed in the 8074 to fit the 6hp motor splines. Which one is cheaper and by how much.

I now have a 6hp motor on mine, just had to buy the splined gear.
However, you need to measure the position of the gear, and pin the motor shaft to prevent the gear from falling off, as there is no retaining device from the factory.

Got a contact number for Dave?
The 8074 is a few hundred cheaper than the 8274 but is starting to sound like the hassles may not be worth saving a few hundred.

If you are going to fit an air freespool ie drum disconnect - Mal Leslie, Flamin Fab type the 8074 will be fine with a 6hp motor with new splined motor pinion gear to replace key type of old 2.5hp motor. The 8274 pull type free spool only disconnects pinion gear at motor. The rest of gear train rotates with drum in free spool mode.
