Motor damage

Post by Maddog »

I was 4x4ing in my 2.8Lux yesterday and the motor started to make a ticking noise up in the head somewhere.

I stopped the car with the motor running and then the low oil light came on....there was about half a litre of oil on the road. The car was blowing a fair bit of smoke out the exhaust, all blue. I had been driving the car with the ticking noise for about an hour before the light came on.

So I towed the car home and it is getting looked at tomorow....any ideas about what might be wrong.

So you drove a car that had an odd ticking noise for about an hour before you thought to yourself."Self that ticking sound sounds odd maybe i should pull up and have a look"

My guess is it has cracked a piston but that doesnt explain the oil on the road unless it dropped a rod but then it would have been running on 3cyl and been realy under powered but then you drove it for an hour before looking at the prob so you prob didnt think about it running rough either. It prob started out as simple as the oil filter comming loose.

It couldnt have dropped a piston because I still had full power with no loss of compression. It was running as smoothas it normally does....

Oil filter was on tight.

So where was the oil comming from that was on the road?
You could see the oil on the road so you must have been able to see where it was comming from.

you only just bought ths car rite???

did you get pre purchase inspection/or get someone to check it out????

from memory u got the car fairly cheap, considering it had a few extra's allready. perhaps it could be an existing problem that has surfaced all of a sudden.

There was full oil in the sump and I am not sure why the oillight came on....

The ticking has not been diagnosed yet but bigend bearings, valves and everything else has been ruled out and we are thinking piston slap.....

Not good.....
