excess oil in transfer case

Post by KH22A »

i've recently rebuild the tranny + transfer and after long drives it drips oil out of the transfer case. Can't find the leak source as the rear trnasfer case cover was covered with oil.Have cleaned it but hasnt seen any drips yet.But the thing is there is excess oil in the transfer case, bout a quart extra.Checked the main tranny found that its missing a quart,so i filled it with the extra from the tranfer.Does anyone have any idea why the oil from the main case gets into the transfer case?

Rocky powered by 3Y.Have change all the bearing,1st and 2nd gear clutch hubs.As everything else looked okay.

Also the tranny tends to whine when i let the accel. off at cruising speeds in 5th gear.Any ideas as to why?

Thanks in advance.

There is a rubber seal between the transmission and transfer, as well as the paper gasket. Sounds like that rubber seal has gone. It happens commonly on the 60/75 series cruisers.
The ghetto (easy) fix is to run a pipe connecting both transfer and gearbox filler plugs. That way excess oil in transfer goes back into the gearbox.
While it works on these cruisers you would have to consider the position of the filler plugs, in relation to each other. They have to be at the same height to about an inch, or the system will not work without one box being overfilled.
Otherwise enjoy pulling it all to bits again ;) :finger:

Thanks for the replies. But i figured out what went wrong anyways.Just waiting for the 2nd Rocky to get re-sprayed to be done before i pull the tranny out again. The rubber seal mention was changed but since the paper gasket kit is unavailable here,it was put together with gasket sealer where one hole in the transfer case wasnt covered as it would be withe the paper gasket.
I tried the hose connecting the 2 filler holes but it doesnt really work cause the main filler hole is higher than the transfer one but it does help a liltle.

Thanks.
