You'll get an older model GQ for under $7000 and then take it to someone like Sandy @ Aust 4WD Specialist or Cheezy and they'll help you spend the rest on after market mods.
80 series, Locked both ends, Q78ed & a massive 57 k/w to boot!!!!

GQs started in 1988, but go with mid 91 onwards if possible, they have a few enhancements.

Depends if you want a modded one or one stock to do up yourself.

Standard is a good option, as some people build shitboxes and flog them off when they are rooted.

do these engines come in a turbo ? i thaught it was a 3.3 turbo and would that be a good bet for some fairly hard 4x4 ?

3.3 not in GQ thats MQ/MK... They are shit for anything but replacing.

Go with a TD42 and $3k will fit a turbo to it new.

i resent that :finger:

the 3.3 SD33 T motor is a good motor for its day.
Wouldnt put it in anything as an after market motor, but they are a good, solid, relyable early patrol motor.

But u want a GQ so go with a TD42 SWB if ya can get one.....

Not rocketships in stock form, but bullet proof.. 500,000klms is common.. Turbos change them dramatically..

TB42s have more power, but are thristy as fuck, 20ltrs/100klms is a good run.

I know of a standard GQ Shorty For Sale in Melb for about $5,000 ( I think), Silver, Petrol, DX, but a fairly clean looking car. Just need to put a disc brake rear end in it and a few mods and it'll be ready to go. It is competely stock at the moment.
