Hi guys,
It is so hard trying to find any info on the net. I currently have a neat GQ patrol, but unfortunately the tow capacity is only 2500kg. I would keep this car with a turbo if it could be re-rated to tow 3500kg.... but i don't believe it can - and it looks like the new boat will top the 2500kg pretty easy.
So i am considering options. i had tossed up getting an old f350 or chevy etc to tow with and keep the gq. but it is another car and rego (have 3 cars and a bike already....)
So am considering upgrading the old girl. The TB45 patrol falls in not too much dearer than the GQ, but i think may be under powered for the weight, requiring mods to haul it.
The TB48 patrol and the V8 landcruiser/LX470 seem to be the natural competitors. I have a nissan, and also toyotas, so have no real brand loyalty.
I dont do serious off road - the odd play here and there, a bit of beach work.
So how do the power and torque curves compare? the cars over all?
Anyone that has used both - our opinion would be greatly appreciated. I will be chasing an auto as well.
Thanks
Stew

New tow car - TB48 patrol Vs 2UZ cruiser

Several times in my GU I had a GCM of about 6800Kgs .. (may have exceeded a few weight limits ) It pulled and stopped it all OK .. would do whater was aked and never complained .. the only issue was the needle on the fuel gauge would become a bit of blur
The 4.8 will pull what ever you tie it firmly enough to .. as will the 2UZ .. just be prepared to feed both of them at a prodigious rate.

I used to have a Carby GQ, auto, and it was a lot slower than a Manual, so I sold it and bought an EFI, and it wasn't much better, on 35's, with 4.6's, it struggled to do 110kph on an incline.
I now have a LX470, with a blower on it, and it will tow our racecar at 110kph, uphills, no worries! Our racecar is 1600kg, trailer 600kg, plus tools, fuel, equipment etc, at least another couple hundred kg, so about 2600kg.
Car load of crew, fridge, etc, makes it well laden.
Gets about 25l/100 sticking to the speed, obviously would be a lot less, if we let it slow down up hills.
Car is for sale, but it is definately my favourite car I've owned, as a driver.
One time, I towed my Mustang to the painters, so only 1500kg, and the trailer, and the brake controller wasn't connected, and I didn't really notice until 1/2 way there, the cars brakes worked well enough on it's own.

go the 4.8. U dont have to go the auto as mentioned before. there are manual availible. Nissan has the better driveline to. only benifit with the yota is its a v8 and we all know how much better on freeways they tend to be. But i'm sure the cruiser is heavier than the GU poosta.
Personally. i got a 4.8 myself and they r awesome. I've been in an auto 4.7 yota. didn't think much of it apart from a superior cabin build quality.
