Is it worth putting a cromemolly outshaft in a twin transfer set up or is this simply moving the weak point to the short shaft? plan to run reduction gears in the second transfer too, any experienced opinion would be much appreciated.

What do you mean by short shaft?jimmy087 wrote:Is it worth putting a cromemolly outshaft in a twin transfer set up or is this simply moving the weak point to the short shaft? plan to run reduction gears in the second transfer too, any experienced opinion would be much appreciated.

The short shaft is the input shaft.
i have twins in my luxy behind a 5lt. I dont have cromolly output shaft and have never broken one, but i do have a marlin total spline input shaft in the front which i ran at tuff truck this yr and didnt have a problem. i would beef up the input before the output first. I broke 2 inputs at Toperi last yr hense the resoning behind up grading that one.

matt, do you mean the input into the first box or the second i was really refering to the little shaft between the the two transfers, i have heard that the output is the cause of most dramas and show i guess because i know a lot of people tend to run them with reduction gears and a single transfer i hadnt heard of the front input snapping untill now if that is what you broke?

Jimmy yeah the input in the second transfer I run a standard input inthe first transfer and the a marlin Total spline in the second with and adaptor in the transfer adaptor to fit the marlin as it's a bigger shaft
have never broken the first tranfer In put , and I don't run reducution in the rear box either

jimmy087 wrote:yeh thats what thought, so would u say that if i was running reduction gears in the second than the output shaft would be the weaker of the two because of the short shaft being less stressed due to the reduction further dwn the drive train?
cheers jimmy
No I don't have reduction gears cause I already broke the input on them and could get a stronger one to suit. I think the input shaft is the weakest in the box or that's what iv experienced anyway
alot of tuff truck guys run both but intil I break an output I can't see the point
