Hey all. Just had my 1HZ (130 k) in for a fuel pump reco and while it was in, I got a full service, oil change etc. But now I have it back, its got that normal diesel rattle, but 10 x worse.... When first started, its sounds terrible and doesn't get much better when warmed up. The mechanic's not too bothered but says he'll change the oil up from SAE 15w- 40 to something a bit thicker if it doesn't serrle down soon. Any thoughts ?

Thinner oil than you had in it, possibly inj pump could be a bit out of time.

sounds like diesel knock.
The new pump install may be at fault

Did they adjust the reco pump correctly or just line it up to the mark?

Quick check the timing marks on the side of the block and pump. look at it through the wheel arch for a better angle. The marks are pretty fool proof and doing the timing via a guage isn't normally necessary. If the timing is off that much you'd probably have a big smoke problem too.
Did you take it to a diesel injection specialist or a normal mechanic? If it was a reputable diesel shop then you probably don't have anything to worry about. Some 1hz are a bit rattlier than others. If it's not blowing massive smoke or using excessive fuel it's probably alright.
I don't think changing the oil will make any difference. 15/40 is normal for a 1hz in most conditions and 130k isn't really alot of km's for there to be excessive mechanical wear.

Thanks guys. Problem seems to be settling a little. It did go to a specialist and very little if any smoke is visible.... Hopefully nothing to worry about. Heading to the Cape in 3 weeks. Might just be paranoid.....
