Blown Motor, suggestions - 2nd hand motor, rebuild?
Se we blew a motor in our 91 NH this weekend. Steam all over the place, not nice. So far i have pulled off the head, radiator and injectors. Water is through everything and milky oil. So all around not good.
My question, rebuild this motor or buy a second hand one. If a second hand one, any ideas where i could find a second hand motor for fit a 91 NH petrol?

Before ripping it all apart you should have done a compression test. That way you could see the condition of the pots and when you then rip the heads off can see if you just needed a head gasket or if you needed rings as well. Many times ive seen "blown" engines that just require a head gasket and a quick lick off the head to ensure its flat and its good for another 150'000k's.
you could either replace the head gaskets on the current motor (as long as the heads are not cracked and the bottom end is ok)
Or purchase a second hand motor from a TR/TS magna v6 and have it fitted after everything is swapped over ie inlet and exh manifold, sump, oil pickup dizzy etc
The magna engine is probably the cheapest. lots of things to swap over but you will end up with a higher compression engine (10.0:1 against 8.9:1)

Triton with blown motor
I have the same problem with my 2001 triton. I found a good mechanic and took my car to him to fix a few minor problems and give it a service, and turns out it was running on 5 cylinders and he though it had major problems.
He later did a compression test and took the cylinder heads off and one of the valves has burnt out. He said it is best to re-build the whole motor. I was shocked when he said for him to do that would cost around 6 grand! He is looking around for either an already reconditioned motor, or a second hand one with low km's, to see if it would work out cheaper.
Im not sure what to do now, as I dont know much about cars, and even if i did, have no garage to swap a motor myself anyway. I have also just spent money on getting new suspention and snorkel.
Anyone got any ideas?

i did an exchange motor in my nj 3.0l $2000 for motor plus radiator, water pump, clutch,and a lot of other extras ended up around $4000 i am not mech minded all you have to do is look think and take a lOT of photos thats how i did it. (and got a mechanic to check it out before i started it and drove it) all i used was normal tools and an engine lift

im pretty much goin through the same thing as u.. my dad went to drive my NJ Shorty after his jackeroo done a head gasket and mine did the same thing.. he told me it didnt wanna start and when he hill started it it made an awful noise and dropped all the water out of the back of the block.. i got told by the first mechanic it was the heads and i was gunna cost me 2 grand.. so i took it to a friend of my dad and he said he would do my heads for 1 grand but he came back and said that the block had wharped.. i just about rang everyone on the gold coast and got a low import motor for $2150.. it was best quote i got.. everyone else was around 2.5-3k depending on the motor.. so hopeful it gets dropped off tomorrow at my mates factory where its gunna cost a keg of beer to put in.. not a bad deal i reckon .. i also got a quote to rebuild the old motor from memory it was around 2.5 or so but if the heads where stuffed it was gunna be around 1k more.. good luck mate..

If your looking for a paj motor they will try to rape you .. ask for a magna motor .. only minor things need changing (one small bracket needs to be fabbed to hold a sensor ... I should make a template from my old motor and post it.

Don't do that - start a new business. Buy magna motors, then modify and sell them as paj motors. ok so i bit the bullet ang got my engine fully rebuilt. Cost me 6 grand, and I also got extractors put on it at the same time. Runs really well at the moment, heaps more power, but there is a noticable tapping noise. Im hoping everything will be sorted when i take it back for a service after I do 1000 km.
The mechanic I used really knew what he was doing. He striped the motor, and sent all the internals away for re-grinding/boring etc. Cleaned the injectors out, replaced water pump etc. Its like having a new motor, and gives me the confidence to head to some remote places once I have run her in.

Does anyone know if the 3.0 24v is a direct replacement for the 3.0 12v?
If not, What's the difference? Other than 12vSOHC, 24vDOHC.
