Keep at it? Have you tried prying the drum off against the backing plate while hamming it? Sounds like it's rusted up good, or something is badly broken.

Did you remove the little screw that holds the drum to the hub?

the adjuster only goes one way -tighten because of the handbrake auto adjusting lever. You have to push the adjusting lever away with a second screw driver to loosen the adjuster

did you slacken off the star wheel in the right direction? Also I think there is a self tightening mechanism on the handbrake so adjusting on and off won't help.

If not just get behind the drum and find the little curved slotted hole on the bottom side of the backplate, using a screwdriver push the little star wheel around in one directions till it slackens off, probably about 2-3 entire turns i guess. If you get wrong direction the brake will push hard on, so you know you have to go the other way.
At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.

Check your wheel studs as well good time to do them and take two minutes and you won't have to do them for another 20 years.
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
