G'day all, Top place you have here, a wealth of knowledge, I have a wee little problem that someone on here might be able to help me with. My hilux has the steering rod hitting the sump! First up, a bit of background on whats done. It's a LN106:
2" ome springs
2" dropped front crossmember
2" extended hangers
2" body lift
snake shock hoops
rancho's
front diff moved forward 45mm
ifs steering box with a 2wd pitman arm
36's
2.8 diesel
I think thats getting close, ok, the rear cross over steering arm hits the damn sump just on the roll edge of the second buldge towards the front (the buldge that has the oil pump behind it) I have been looking for fixes, it appears that the bump stops still have close to 60mm before they get hit when it hits the sump so it's a bad problem to have. I can fit blocks under the front springs now it has cross over but wasn't real keen on lifting it any further (tyres fit now) and I could only get probably 1" anyway. I could lift the motor 2" to match the body lift but what happens to the rear 2 piece tailshaft with the centre bearing? I also wouldn't have much left on the front tailshaft angles before they bind at full droop, and I had plans to run longer hoops and shocks down the track anyway so they would run out for sure then. I think I can panel beat the sump a touch but not enough to fix it. It's a bugga, I wasn't expecting this problem and as it's my daily driver I need to get it sorted . cheers and thanks

I had a similiar problem but my arms are alot further forward then yours..
I have 3" springs but dont have the dropped front hanger, and when i hit BIG bumps it would contact the sump.
To fix this i bought better bump stops and lifted them up a fair way so the bump stops compress alot before the arms can hit.
Basically i have nolathane compressable stops and have them lifted 4 inches higher then the standard ones..
Fixed my problem..

thanks brad, I wanted to steer away from extending the bump stops if i could as it basically only shortens the suspension flex back, I spent enough getting it to flex, don't want to cut it back now, and thats why the high steer went in in the first place, after a day to think a bit I have picked up a second transfercase by chance, I have been thinking of doing the motor/gearbox lift, as well as fitting up a second transfer, this should reduce the effective angle of the front tailshaft to allow me to get full flex still ?, I would go to a one piece rear tailshaft at the same time. It's not the easy fix I was looking for but would be a big change and improvement ,,,,,I think,,,,,

extending bumpstops does not limit your flex.
in fact it can help with flex by providing a leverage point for the diff.
If your going twin transfers you need a transfer case from a 79-83 model hilux or youll need a top shift conversion kit plus the adapter to fit them together.
Why dont you make a SHS driveshaft if it is too short?
you can also notch your sump and move the oil pickup.

ok,,, I don't understand how extending the bump stops will not limit the flex? At the moment I can flex until one side contacts the bump stop and the other side fully extends the shock? the transfer I was offered is a later model than that, so yes, I would need the top shift conversion if I don't pick an earlier one up, The tailshaft isn't too short, I have already extended it 3" to suit my diff relocation, the problem is if I lift the motor/gearbox up the same as the body lift the tailshaft almost binds now when the diff is hanging free (like on a hoist) , if I lift the motor it won't hang down enough not to bind in the uni's, the steering rod doesn't hit on the bottom buldge of the sump where the oil pickup is, it's hits forward of that , it's the spot on the 2.8 where the oil pump is above in the sump. oh,,,whats a shs driveshaft? cheers

I honestly did not even notice the truck flexing less... But it has more travel then i usually need..
SHS- square hollow section (square tube drive shaft), not the best if you want it balanced but usually the bigger trucks run them but they are mostly crawling speeds.
The only real good fix for the front shaft is to get a High pinion diff and bung it in there, it will be ALOT harder to damage it and it will reduce vibration when driving at speeds.

Mine and a few others i know of have been hitting for ages without leaking in my case it didn't have bumpstops. I do recomend using 80 series rear bumpstops in the front of lux's there a bit taller and will absorb better than the stock lux ones. short of doin that if it still hits and your worried about it take it off, Cut out where it's hitting and a bit then find some steel or exhust tube cut a section out of that and weld it in.
