I just bought my first Jimny. Its a 2001 jlx thats completly stock. Just wondering what mods would be good for it if I wanted to just do some beach work and light muddy trails. Also how would i go about mounting some lights on the roof i would asume it would be dificult because of the softtop. Thanks alot
for beack driving the best thing is to prob keep it pretty low and use standard road tyres... my zook loves sand with standard tyres that are pretty worn down...
too much lift and high speed beach driving(like fraser-80km/h) can end in disaster...
if u want a bit of height my mates jimny has a 2inch lift and 30's and handles pretty good...
if its just used for mud not rocks u prob only wanna go 2inch.. and some 30" muddies

I fail to see the correlation between lift, high speed and 'disaster'. I've done speeds well over 100km/h on the beach with 4" lift and 32's and I'm still here.
The problem with beach driving (fraser and anywhere else) in general lies with the morons who think doing donuts in a troopy is a good idea. If you drive sensibly and to the conditions, a lifted vehicle is as safe as any other.
The biggest issue you will face on mud trails is diff clearance. When driving in ruts dug out by bigger tyred trucks I found I would drag my diffs along the centre until I eventually ended up beached with all 4 spinning. Get the tallest tyres you can fit (and afford). Anything above a say 30" tyre will severely impact upon your gearing, but if you're not doing much hill climbing and can afford a spare set of "road wheels" for everyday driving, it won't be undriveable.
On the sand the Jimny is king. I did most of Fraser in 2wd last time I was there and only selected 4x4 for the softer stuff near our camp site. There is absolutely nothing you need to do to be effective on sand. Apart from install some strong beefy tow points for when you will undoubtedly need to pull bigger trucks out of the soft stuff.

You've just made the correlation right there. Too many people don't alter their driving style to their higher centre of gravity vehicle and the at times slippery, and at times bitey sand conditions.
It's the main reason the government has banned the rental troopies with side on seating and roof storage from Fraser. Backpackers were piling into these things with a centre of gravity somewhere about 50 feet above them and expecting to be able to drive them like they would drive their daddy's 5 series back home on the autobahn.
