Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
Seems my Glow Plugs have prematurally ejeculated in to a pool of multen metal spoof. I have had this problem before, when i noticed before the engine rebuild that the glow plugs had got over excited. So when the engine was rebuilt new Glowies went in along with the new cyl head and injectors , pistons, reco pum ect.
Now it's been 40000km and the glowies no longer want to party, blowing their top and exposing the wire coil inside. Is it normal for them to only last 30-40000km before they blow ? If not how long should they last and what may be wrong with the system ?
BTW : It's a Lux with a 3L and has been Blown since day dot running 11psi from the hair dryer.
Any help would be detremental to me lux, as i'll flog Fck out of it when it's back on the road.
Thanks

Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
What sort of EGT's are you getting? I can't say i've ever had glow plugs melt on me before - stop working yes, but not melt.
Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
Check your glow circuit, do they ever turn off? Maybe the timer is knackered and running them all the time.
Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
How would I do that ? I turn the key and the glow light comes on then as it turns off there is a click. EGT's could be high but it don't get hot at all even when towing.yamaha__308 wrote:Check your glow circuit, do they ever turn off? Maybe the timer is knackered and running them all the time.

Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
I had exactly the same problem on a 2.8 3l motor they lasted less than 8 mths.
couldnt start the car, so we pulled the glows after checking they had power etc.
all the ends were totally blow/melted off.
I couldnt find a brand on them but a mechanic I USED to use installed them for me.
I have replaced them with NGK ones and checked the glow time (15 seconds)
was correct, its all been good so far.
It worries me where the ends ended up but what can you do now?
Ohh and mine not turbo just a dead stock NA motor,I suspect there is cheap glow plugs doing the rounds.
cheers andrew

85 high roof 1.3, 6.5 tc, air lockers, ruf and 34 swampers. yep its an ugly pos.
Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
put a multi meter on the glow plug and get someone to turn ignition on.muddylux wrote:How would I do that ? I turn the key and the glow light comes on then as it turns off there is a click. check the voltage and time the glow current time. Mine was around 15 sec

Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
Put a test light to the pos glowie bar and turned the switch. Test light came on along with the glow light on the dash. about 10sec and the dash light goes off, but the test light stayed lit for another 15sec.
Is this right ? If not how can I fix it ?

Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
That's right. AFAIK, glow plugs run higher current initially and then lower current for another period of time.muddylux wrote:Put a test light to the pos glowie bar and turned the switch. Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
Run the NGK ones and they last you long time.
I had dramas with the crap off Ebag melting and smoking up the glow relay and fusible link.
Went back to NGK and all is good.

Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
Well all should be good then. There are 7volt and 11v glow plugs and the ones that came out were 11v and the new ones are 11v. So it was not like i was running a 7v plug in a 11v system. All good.
The new ones are VSP brand PT-151 from evilbay and have a 12 month warranty. lol
I will see how they fare,.. and if they fail i will slot in some NGK's and see how they glow.... i mean go.
to my Hilux
Thanks all.

Re: Premature ejeculating Glow Plugs
Worth mentioning that high EGTs will not show up as high engine temperature (ie. stock temp gauge is NO indication of EGTs)muddylux wrote: EGT's could be high but it don't get hot at all even when towing.
Best off fitting an EGT, especially if its aftermarket turbo system, or running higher than stock boost.
