Hey all,
Just wanted to know what most people used in the way of hose or tubeing to extend the hight of there diff's and gearbox breathers on my 84 hilux. i was considering using nylon tubeing with push-fit fitting or am i better off using some type of rubber hose. Sorry for trivial question but i really dont want to use something that is either going to leak or break easy in the bush and thought i might get a few opinions.
cheers

diff & gearbox breathers

Re: diff & gearbox breathers
I made some extended diff breathers for my lux(86), and i just got some 8mm irrigation hose from bunnings, some small hose clamps, and it was easy as.
I used the diff breathers out of my spare diff housings, pulled the top caps off, screwed them in, hose and clamp, then ran the hose from the front diff along the tie rod, to the passenger side, up to the chassis, along the chassis rail to a spot behind the cab(mines a dual cab), and from the rear diff, up to the fuel tank bracket, then along the chassis to the spot behind the cab.
The spot behind the cab, is in between the headboard of the tray and the back of the cab/body, I bolted a piece of alloy angle there, drilled some holes, put the original breathers in the holes, hose and clamped, them, and done.
If you want to see the pics, they are somewhere in my build thread.
Just remember to leave enough length in the hose for any suspension travel.
The hose I used was about 10bucks for 15m, and the hose clamps were a coupe of bucks.
Theyve been on there for a few months now, and Ive done alot of 4x4ing and they are still in good condition.

Re: diff & gearbox breathers
I used 1/8" brass barb fittings screwed into the housing with some oxygen hose (the blue hose from 0xy/acetlyene gear) with the crimps and a cheap fuel filter inside the tray and top of the eggine bay.
But i had access to some free stuff at work a while back and only cost me for my cheap filters.
I personally would not use plastic hose and the pneumatic push in fittings as these are easily torn of the diff with sticks, and like air lokker lines, can go undetected causing water in your diff...
I never had one on my gear box, done shi# loads of driving through water over the years and never had water go in.

3.0L turbo diesel, 4" lift, bud's front housing, track assasin cv's, air lokker front + Rear, beadlock'd 37 stickies, high steer, 15.5" travel ranchos, high pinion diff and coils on the rear
Re: diff & gearbox breathers
Thanks heaps for the ideas and feed back! looks like ill be ditching the nylon tube idea for some rubber hose!
Re: diff & gearbox breathers
i have used fuel lines, you want to be using soemthing that can deal with the oil vapours, as they will degrade most rubbers or plastics,
gearbox and transfer fittings are a bit tricky, i havent yet replaced them
