Safari snorkel hose collapsing.

Post by lshobie »

Hi Guys, I've started tearing my truck down for a much needed tranny/transfer rebuild and engine swap, when I removed my snorkel I noticed something strange about my safari snorkel. I own a 2003 79 series, there is a rubber "V" shaped hose about 3 inches in diameter that attaches the snorkel to the air box, the rubber hose looks like it has been caving in on itself on the portion of the hose that is inside the fender. That makes sense as I have been hearing a huge vacuum sound when I really put my foot down on the throttle. 1HZ engine is turbo'd.

It is pretty easy to see what is happening, with very little pressure I can collapse the tube with my thumb and finger.

I was going to place something rigid inside the hose when I reinstall but that isn't right as I am sure safari has probably come up with something else.

Anyone having this problem?

Regards,

Louis

sounds like the pipe is real crappy or the snorkel itself is too restrictive.

I found somewhat of a performance loss when fitting my 4" snorkel as opposed to the short pipe and POD filter i was using initially when setting up.

Maybe a custom snorkel is in order OR the coming soon larger safari snorkel!

Its designed to replace the factory unit though.

Hi Guys, I might go custom like zoltan, I bet this restriction is causing higher egt's and lost performance for sure. What a pain in the butt - too bad safari didn't get it right the first time.

Got my answer from ARB, as I thought:
"Hi Louis,

That explains it. The combination of the boost level you are running and the pre cleaner will be exceeding the design airflow of the snorkel assembly.

If you can source a Donaldson 12” pre cleaner, or resort to the Safari Air Ram, that will help. According to the Safari Boffins you are roughly double the boost that the snorkel is designed to cope with. If you continue to collapse the hose, then a locally sourced alternative with stiffer walls will be the only additional step, however the cross section of the snorkel body will then be the limiting factor.

Kind Regards"

Looks like a custom 4 inch is in the works then. Yeehaw - even lower egt's and better performance!

I'll be honest, every time I ask them a serious question they always come back very professional and from an engineering point of view - no BS, gotta love it.
