Hilux Project.
Hey all,
Am looking at buying a LN176R SR5 dual cab hilux with 250,000km on it.
Has a 5L in it, he wants $12,500 but thats always negotiable.
Is silver and looks the goods.
If I buy it, I'm gonna chop the IFS rubbish out of it straight away and go 80 series or gq diffs front and rear.
Was going to put a turbo and intercooler with a 3inch exhaust.
Locked front and rear diffs and build it to run 35s on road and 37s for off road.
4.88 diff ratios and possibly crawler gears, but im pretty sure its a chain transfer so will be costly for adaptors.
Has anyone done this before??
It was the lux project or buy a 100 series and chop into a ute.
Cheers
Dan

Re: Hilux Project.
Sounds a bit like mine. Im going 60 series diffs holden 5.0l and land cruiser h55f g/box. If I was starting again I would go gq diffs. Also building mine to suit 37's. Apart from tyres it will be all legal and road registered in QLD
Wtb, 105 series rear tyre carrier, alloys and tyres.
Re: Hilux Project.
Dan, whats wrong with the 4runner you have?? Or the 4runner ute you are halfway through doing??
Why not just keep the pretty blue one and use that.

Re: Hilux Project.
Why spend $10k on an 84 4runner?? Just defeats the purpose, its old and I'm sick of spending money on it.
Its too old and I've outgrown it.
Utes long gone dude, it left at least 8 months ago.
My car gets driven everyday so want something reliable for long trips such as high country and want the modern car features and the creature comforts.
Old cars should only be weekend play toys.
Yeah I was thinking gq diffs but the handbrake issue as i would have to go transfer h/b and that means i need a gear t/c

Re: Hilux Project.
Made a pretty good discovery this weekend.
While working on my mates lux with gq diffs on it, noticed that the lux short side cv and gq short side cv are same overall length and the cv is the same diameter.
So this steers me away from gq diffs in the lux.

except that their not the same diameter or thickness
Re: Hilux Project.
Been driving on standard lux CVs for ages now, constant 35s on and off and the odd 37 here and there and they have lasted 18months now of wheeling it hard at least twice a month and with a lockright.
But want to run 37s or 38s with it soon and not so keen on going gq diffs, still would have to upgrade the CVs in it.

Re: Hilux Project.
Go the 100 series option. I've been there and done that. You can buy a petrol 100 for a similar price to the 5L dual cab and the money saved from the SAS you can buy a heap of goodies for the 100. You can also go wheeling straight away, no lost time doing the major mods.
Re: Hilux Project.
I have come across a 91 80 series that Im looking at this weekend.
-1hz with 250,000km
-snorkel
-front and rear arb air lockers (NEW)
-65L water tank underneath
-new 33 mtz
-kaymar rear bar with spare wheel carrier
-3inch suspension lift
-new h/d clutch
-under bonnet shower
-arb bullbar with brush bars and rocksliders
-warn winch
-engineered
- and a few more extras.
Hes asking 12k for it
If I like what I see I may cut it into a dual cab.
I got a quote from lukeys 4x4 on the SAS on the lux, 7k drive in drive out and thats me having to supply the front diff.

So buying this your straight up saving 15k+ on a hilux. Prob more like 20k. Its not going to cost you 10k to cut it into a dual cab.
