350 chev conversion into swb gq auto
350 chev conversion into swb gq auto
Hi guys i was just wondering if the 4 speed auto in my 1990 patrol is strong enough to handle a 350 carby chevy, is there any mods to do to the gear box or any ideas would be great thanx
Re: 350 chev conversion into swb gq auto
if its in good nick to start with you need to do a couple things to it
1 change the torque converter to one thats suitable to the onset of torque of the chev
2 change the valvebody to a wholesale automatics one one or put in a shift kit to firm up the shifts and increase line pressure ( cheap way out reliability questionable)
3 FIT THE transmission TPS, AND ADJUST IT PROPERLY immediatly,
you can also manualise it.
Its going to cost you either way to have a reliable auto in the patrol. you either put a solid chev gearbox behind it and spend the money to make it solid, or you spend the money on the origional nissan one to make it solid. Major differance is the price of a rebuild with the nissan box if you blow it, rebuild prices are huge compared to the chev boxes.
Personally, i use chev 700r4 ( 4l60) auto box geared up for the horsepower of the engine and the weight of the truck, Much cheaper option, i pick up used boxes with blown gears for as little as 25$ from swapmeets and the like, then spend the money on the " hang together bits" on the inside.
PS. If you carby your chev , your going to have to straight gas it for easy Engineering.
