80 Series Landcruiser high beam lights not working

Post by g35me »

I just picked up an 80 series Landcruiser last friday. The high beam lights for the first couple of days would delay for a couple of seconds before they turned on. Now when I push the stalk forwards to turn them on permanently they will not turn on at all, but they will turn on immediately if the stalk is pulled toward the driver for a highbeam flash. Would anyone be able to point me in the correct direction to fix this problem.

Sounds like the contacts in the stalk, try pulling it out and cleaning the contacts. Don`t know if this is possible as I haven`t played with my 80 yet as the boss want let me

I had this happen once to another car that had a relay that the highbeam wires ran through, it turned out the the contacts in the relay did not function properly. Changed the relay and problem solved, but considering I know nothing about this vehicle yet I cannot be sure that it is the same thing.

yeah, if they work when you move stalk to flash position then wiring/relays/lamps all work. must be switch i reckon too.

here's a pic of the headlight circuit:

I had a similar problem with the lights on my 60, pull back to flash they would work but push forward and nothing, including low beam. I pulled the switch apart and I played a bit with it and got it working again, it's a fine balance betwee too much tension which will give you high beam then no low beam or not enough tension which will give you what you have now no high beam. So either pull apart and have a play or get a replacement switch.

Howd this go as I have exactly the same problem on my 80 Series.. stalk in Flash position works but stalk in constant high beam position cuts all lights both low and high.

Any tips before I pull it apart? nothing is spring loaded and flies out while taking it apart?

I had a problem with the lights but more around nothing working at all. It was actually a problem inside the stalk which is a sealled unit. Bought another one from wreckers and ended up with variable intermitant (have a poverty pack)

This is going back a few years now :) It ended up being a broken wire that run under the battery tray. I pulled EVERYTHING apart includung the stalk and finally took it to an auto elect and he tracked the wire down. I dont think I would have ever found it.
