fixed my spungy brakes today

Post by JBE »

I replaced the rear brake pads on my GQ the other day and bled the brakes thoroughly and after that the brake felt really spungy with the pedal sinking. I was sure that I had no leaks and the master cylinder is almost new. This was bugging me for the best part of the week and I searched the forums a bit to see what other people have done. One guy suggested to counter-bleed the rear callipers through the proportioning valve. This is something, I had never heard of before. I thought why not and gave it a go and actually worked. I pushed the pistons back in and bled the line through the nipple on the proportioning valve. After that, I bled the prop valve and callipers the conventional way with about eight strokes each and everything was fine. I think the idea is to push any air out through the highest point. I’m just wondering if anyone else has tried this and solved their problems.
Cheers
Joachim

Will do that in the next few weeks! Thanks for the advice mate.

PS. Might want to edit the thread title to "spongy" too. ;)

I also read hat some old school people tap the calipers with a mallet to move trapped air out.
