Coils Falling out of GU.

Post by DanwinGQ »

I did a search on this topic and found a tonne of old stuff and was wondering if things have evolved at all in the way of Flexy coils. Ive got a GU wagon, 3" inch king springs, 4" EFS extreme shocks. Everything is set up for 4", (drop boxes, brake lines, sway bar extension).
It is a family wagon and the Mrs wouldnt let me go straight to 4" so I started at 3 with the intension to sneek another inch later.
The rear coils seem to fall out when flexing, so was thinking do I go with a 3" flexy coil so they stay trapped under flex of just get the 4" coils from kings??
Have read a lot of info on flexy coils sitting a lot higher, sagging under load and just being a lot softer on the road. Have they been improved over the last year or so??
I don't want a boat cause I tow a camper and the Mrs drives the kids around all week so still needs road manners to a certain degree!

Your coils are falling out because you're running 3 inch springs and 4 inch shockies, get a longer spring, a shorter shock or some drop out cones

How would your mrs even know the difference between a 3" and 4" lift? Seriously.

I understand why the coils are falling out. (Der)
The question was what did people think between going to a 4" coil or go with the 3" flexy coil?
And, have the flexy coils improved with there development or are they still saggy, bouncy and heights all over the place.

I don't like the idea of drop out cones and retainers. I had that sort of set up in my GQ and the noise used to annoy the shit out of me!!

They can't really develop a flexy coil spring mate, they behave the way they do because they are what they
are. If your happy with the way it performs then retain the bottom of thr coil and put a locating cone on the top, otherwise just get the 4" spring, although I would go a lovell or dobinsons coil over a king unit
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!

I ran the dobbinson flexy coils in 5". The front sagged to about 3 & 1/2" in less than 3 months ended up using coil spacers to get it back up. I found that the flexy coils gave a vibration thru the patrol, being a progressive rate coil in there designe I put it down to that. Had Kings 3" coils (constant rate) for 5 years previous to that, never had a prob with them. Now running toughdog coils in 6" last 12 months no probs either. from what I was told kings make toughdog & mega lift coils as well. Comes down to personel chioce, cost me a bit but I tried the flexy's & didn't like them others swear by them (superior 1's not dobbinsons) ,others agree with me. My preference is to go the kings/toughdog in a length to suit your shocks, cheers.

Yeah, I'm thinking I will just go 4" from kings. I can get them far cheaper than others and never had a problem with them in the past.
Was considering 3" flexys because I got done by department of transport in my old GQ and didn't want the attention as 4" is starting to look pretty big on 33's as far as the fun police are concerned. 3" is a little less obvious.

Hey mate, don't just assume that the coils won't fall out if you fit 3' flexy coils or 4' coils. The spring may still be to short.
You'd be best to fully flex it up somewhere so the coil falls out and then measure the distance between the spring mounts.

The free length of your new springs should be longer than the distance between the spring mounts.

You could just put coil spacers in to make up the shortfall in the spring length if you know how thick they need to be to retain the coil.

my 3in flexy's were only about 10mm shorter than my 18mth old 6in coils sitting next to each other out of the car.

i'm happy with the flexys.

outlawgq, whats this vibration you speak of? i've been chasing a noise that sounds like my exhaust is rattling at low revs under a little bit of load. really hoping its not the flexys.

6in coil on the left, new flexy on the right.

GU Town,

I'm always on the look out for vibes ,noises etc & all tho it wasn't real bad I did notice it. Not sure how to explain it but it was a slight vibe i could feel thru the whole truck (obviously only while driving), kinda like a vibe from the diesel engine if the engine mount had collapsed but very faint compared to that. only noticed it once i changed to the flexy coils & it was gone once I changed to the toughdog coils.

Hey GU Town,
U said the coils when standing free where similar in height.
How did they sit in the car compared to your 6" lift?? Did they sit at what you thought was a 3" lift??

It would sit lower because only the bottom 2/3rds of the coil are taking up weight doing the work.
Those 6" coils pictured have 8 wraps, my 6" coils have 10 :?: The top 4 wraps of the flexi's pictured do virtually nothing they are so close together at free length. If they were retained at top and bottom then the weight of the wheel and diff would stretch the top bit down a bit for more droop but not put much ground pressure on the wheel for traction.

yes they sit at the 3in when loaded they are the XHD 600kg constant weight ones. they sit slightly higher unloaded IMO.

quite happy with them.

that just means your coils will have a longer fully compressed length. not sure it means anything else.

We have changed our flexy coils to ultra flexy coils.
Soon we will have them in normal duty and extra heavy duty.
Normal duty are designed for loads up to 150kg and the extra heavy duty coils 21mm wire will be for those with more weight. Having extra heavy coils without extra load will give a rough ride though.

Our Ultra flexy coils will flex about 2 inches more then our regular flexy coils.
You could run EFS Extremes with our normal 3" flexy coils, so with out ultra flexy coils you can easily run longer shocks then the EFS Extremes.

I am re-doing all heights so we are as close as possible to a 75mm lift for our 3" lifts so not higher then a normal coil, maybe a bit lower, and you can purchase them in half inch intervals meaning you can get a 3.5" also.

Our Ultra flexy coils will have a 5 year warranty and unless you have black ones, you don't have the Ultra Flexy Coils. (Unless you were part of the testing)

With the testing so far and customer feedback, our normal duty Ultra flexy coils are very comfortable without much body roll at all.

You will not find any feedback on this forum about our Ultra flexy coils because not many people have them yet.
