Hydraulic winch power pack
Hi guys, I have bought myself a hydraulic winch but I don't won't to run it from the power steering pump. Does anyone know where I can get a power pack using a 12V electric motor driving a hydraulic pump from? I need a minimum of 13.25L/min @ 1500PSI.

any hydraulic work shop should be able to knock that up for ya, but a 12volt motor wont give a hydraulic system much balls.
my suggestion is to look into a few different things
1. pto driven hydraulic pump - runs of your motor, can have any amount of litres per min that you want. and can use your gears for faster winching
2. you can get a hydraulic pump belt driven of your motor, same as above except non variable with gears.
3. seperate motor powered hydraulic pump. similar to a lawnmower motor mounted with the pump and all that, bigger but is independant of your motor, and would be only suited to a ute.
these are the options i was looking at with one of the bloke i worked with at one of the hydraulic places i was at.
there is such a thing in the states ive read up on called a clutch pump, if i remember correctly they work sort of like a aircon clutch, so they are not running all the time, its an alternative to a pto drive.
in my opinion pto is the best bet, if pto drive is unavailable, a pump running of the motor would be just as good.
but you are correct, using your power steering pump is worthless.

Some vehicles have electric motor driven power steering pumps, that you could use, but don't expect any higher flow than from your own vehicles PS pump.
Some trucks have power packs that might suit you - they are used for tail lifts and the likes. Try truck wreckers.
There are small electric power packs made by Enerpac, or Portapower and the like, but I don't know if they produce 12V versions.
Otherwise brew your own using a pump and electric motor, or go to a hydraulic shop.

While 12vdc power packs are readily available, there duty cycle would be hopeless for winching. They are really only suited for intermintant use, things like tailgate loaders, small cranes, ramps etc.
Your 13.25l/min @ 1500psi equates to around 3.5-4hp (rough figures) and most of the common dc powerpacks are only equiped with 1.1-2kw motors. Efficiancy wise, you would be better of running a normal electric winch than a hydraulic winch powered by a DC power unit.
PTO or engine/belt driven would be a much better option. Use engine speed to vary winching speed. You have to watch the amount of torque you drag through some PTO setups, think even a 'cruser PTO is restricted to around 9hp for reliability from memory.
Have seen pumps belt driven of the engine with electric clutches and suport bearings that worked quite well, driving things like rear spinner motors on small shit/fertilizer spreaders. Seen an early 80's lux with one powering a tipping tray and small crane, even had rear hydraulic remotes, so the guy could hook on his farming equipment and lift it to drag back to the shed without getting his tractor.

i saw a fella with a 75 that came into our workshop, he had a big hydraulic pump on the front bar, with a shaft through to the crank, straight through the radiator(had been modified to suit) but man it was a decent pump. used for a drill rig.
the enerpacks and the like would be totaly useless for that application as they have small pistons in there pums, ie about 10mm, thats why the delver 10,000 psi, but their flow is very very small.
as mentioned buy myself and ricky and bush, pto or engine driven would be the way to go. that way you can use a larger pump. ( 20 l per min) also you have to decide what type of pump you want, gear is cheapest, but your limited to what it puts out at the rpm your using. a variable vane pump would be better, but limts your pressure (shouldn't matter for winching, talk to some one with more experience than myself they should know better) a variable piston pump would be idea, but expensive. at least with no load it would pull the line in quick, then once you load up it will automatically de stroke its self and provide large pressure giving you tough puling power. and when the load is less it would be half way between the two, providing quick movement and using just enough pressure to do the job.
its a complicated thing to set up. and is time consuming once you start doing all the equations to find out what you need to do to get it where you want it. you will also need some kind of protection mechanism. like a roll back system or something so that if you bust a hose on a hard winch it doesn't let go and the truck goes smashing down a hill, something which i was learning abut before i left the job, but never got to the end of so i still need to learn abut that.
a proper system would cost alot more than a highmount, but probably the same if not cheaper than a dual motored 24v one. and would have the advantage of being able to pull all day every day with 100% duty cycle.
main drawback, with truck not running you cant use. but if your truck is not capable of running electric winching will not last long either. my advise to all people is to always carry a hand winch just for cheap insurance.

there is easy ways to do this, and can be done neatly and cheaply!!
~13l/min is easy, A well setup OE pump can flow 2.5-4GPM @1500 psi.
