Whats everyones thoughts on the water to air intercoolers on the american ebay at the moment there about 500 for the hole kit just wondering has anyone fitted one cheers

Hey mate if ur talking about the frozenboost/siliconeintakes kits, they're great! I have one that I custom ordered from him with the Bosch cobra pump (make sure u do this as otherwise ur kit will be shipped with a bilge pump) and I wanted a long flow cooler (similar in design to the PWR barrels) have a look at my build up for a pic of how I customized it to my truck but I'm happy with it. Cost me about $700 total instead of the 1500-2000+ from just about anyone in Aus. If ur on a budget.. DO IT! If u can afford $2500 and looking for huge power support, find matt mcinnes for a laminova set up.

Hah.. He didn't have that as a kit when we ordered two of them about 2 yeas ago. But that is the same kit I have minus the reservoir. I just found some aluminum elbow and made up a flange plate and got them all welded together. Couple of silicone bends and it's ready to go.

yeah had a look at your build looks pretty sweet you havent had any problems with it it at all notice the power differance much

Didn't notice a power difference as such but it revs out a bit quicker and harder and we were able to wind a few more pound of boost in as well. Used to feel a bit gutless above 2800rpm and now according to the dyno peak power is at 3000! So it quite easily revs to 3400-3500 now.. Especially with the gas hah! The tuner was pretty impressed with how efficient it was..

worth the coin at the end of the day though compared to the denco one like 2 grand and the one on the link has got big ones to prob work a bit better

How do you find the cobra/bosch pump? Is it noisey? and which side is it on the hot or cold?

I have just fitted one and its fairly noisey, on the cold side mounted on its side so the outlet points straight up, inlet in level with the ground.

Not sure what engine you have your pump on but on my TD42 there is no possible way I can hear the water pump above the noise of the engine.. Let alone the two thermo fans.. I understand what u mean it does sound loud when it's on by itself, but there is no time when I have it runnin by itself.

I Have one in my patrol down under the PS head light, on the cold side, it is allso the lowest point so it won't run dry.

Thanks, no way can you here it with the engine running. Did you notice much of a drop in EGTS when on max boost? So far around down my EGTs are slightly lower, and when i've held it pegged on max boost EGTS raise slower than they did previously.

Whats the consensus about running straight water or a glycol mix?

I droped 50deg at full load but gone up in from 12psi to 15psi big in take plenum and big injector pump to.

With my camper on and 35's is were i noticed the big diffrence in power wise.

I would say that if your temps are higher than air / air your heat exchanger, IC and pluming must be to small for your aplication. This is the case with alot of off the shelf PWR barrel type IC's.

You need a heat exchanger that has the most surface area and volume you can fit infront of your radiator even if you have to cut your hole front grill out and replace it with perferated mesh. You also want as much water volume as possible and a double pass IC with a large amount of internal surface area for heat transfer.

The hp ratings they give the IC's do not apply to Diesel engines in any way and none of the barrel types flow enough for 4.2 ltr + engines especially if you want to run over 15psi of boost, pump and turbo mods etc,etc.

I personally am using a frozen boost heat exchanger 26"x 14" x 1" with the bosch cobra pump running full time and a four core custom IC, plenum etc, (huge surface area) and my IC averages 5 deg C above ambient (49 deg C) crusing through central Aust 110km/hr . I have been using this set up for the last 2yrs and I have a GU pump injectors and custom turbo 26psi boost, a moderate 166RWHP with 33" tyres. By the way I live in Darwin and if you can get a air/air to work this well I will F@#% myself.

Ive also been looking at something similar to this for my non intercooled turbo td42. my setup is larger pump with compensator, GU turbo and 3" exhaust running 13psi.

what im after is a W2A intercooler to suit this and stil have enough room for a few more psi and maybe a slightly bigger ball bearing turbo in the future.

300winmag, are you sayin this (above) w2a intercooler would be to small for my needs? i like the barrell type as they are simple and easy to install, but there is no point if its not going to acheive anthing.

What type did you guys end up with?

I used the Type 10 with a custom PWR double pass rad in the front, and put a 5lt inline tank to bost the capasity.

while i agree a lot of the kits come with piddly small radiators, W/A is always a bit less performing than A/A. primary reason is simply W/A has two barriers to heat removal while A/A only has one. ie A/A is air-alloy-air while W/A is air-alloy-water-alloy-air. plus the heat exchangers are made a bit thicker alloy due to risk of leakage.
at the end of the day is that little bit extra heat anything to worry about?

Any ideas on what to use for a water tank?? or are you just making them by yourself to suit??

when i put mine in id like to maybe use a tank mounted high with a filler cap instead of the inline filler cap.

Yes I'am saying barrels are to small especially if you want to do any mods. They are to restrictive.

Water has denser mass than air therefore is able to absorb more heat and gives greater potential for heat transfer if set up correctly. W/A IC with a heat exchanger the same size as a compared front mount A/A IC will be more efficient. It will also give more sustainable lower temps under high load and slow speeds 4WDing.

When mounting your kit some helpful hints

1. Use rubber mounts for heat exchanger and IC vibration will kill them cracks etc.

2. Use silicon hose if you can afford it, 3/4" + depending on application.

3. You can find resiviors on E bay but you may have to Mod them.

4. When mounting your heat exchanger don't use it as part of a stress member, i.e. streached between top and bottom of radiator support panel that flexes alot off road.

Some of this may sound obviouse to some of you but I have seen things done by so called proffessionals that defy logic, so if I am insulting any one its not intended.

I brought and installed the 600hp Frozen boost Kit a month or so ago .
here's how it came up .

it's still a bit messy but it all seems to work OK .
I'm running 15psi and a maxed out Stock injector pump . I cant get the EGT over 500c even while towing a couple of tonn of wood through the hills .
it was a bit of a pain to mount but I think the stuffing around is worth it .
The 600hp kit would struggle to fit a GQ without a body lift .

Wow, that's one nice engine bay! Well done!

It's nice how you modified your intake manifold, do you have any pictures of the process? It'd be great as well to see how/where you mounted your radiator?
