shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
hey fellas i recently changed my gearbox mount as it was broken. i instaled the new mount and since then i am getting really bad shuttering when i take off in first gear and also in reverse. i suppose i can explain the shuttering to feel as if i try taking off in the wrong gear..
ive taken to to a mechanic and he said it looks all good and cant see why it would b shuttering.
just woundering if its happened to anyone or know of what it could possibly be without seeing it.
cheers

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
I have had the same problem in the past and found is was my tyres.
For example my front tyres where 275's to the back one which where 265's.
It mainly shuttered just after changing from 4wd back to 2wd.
So I ended up having to replace diffs.
Hope this helps.

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
not ya center bearing?
Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
U bolts tight? Uni joints good? Centre bearing in-tack? Diff pinion sloppy? Engine mounts ok?

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
Engine mounts r sweet. now that i think about it, i had my diff breather hose get really badly tangled into my center bearing when i was driving up my drive way which pretty much bought my car to a stand still. I shall check it out this Arvo. It is a relatively New center bearing but might b stuffed now

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
OK if your mounts are sweet , tailshaft uni's ok centre bearing if you have one etc..... most likely it will be the clutch disc, they have dampener springs in them for take off and gear change etc... these spring take the load up while tring too take off and under load. Over tiime and abuse these spring weaken or fail.... So replacig the clutch should fix your issue, i cant see tyres doing it... different diff ratios will only come into play when you are in 4wd not everyday driving so rule that out.

yea my money is on clutch, you obviously had the box of to put new mounts in, make sure there is no grease or oil on the plates,

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
thanks mate. my clutch is about 3 years old. and had a good 2 years of solid 4wding every weekend when it was a stocko. so im guessing its probly time for a new one. is there any other way to test to see if it could be the clutch?macarthur 4x4 wrote: So replacig the clutch should fix your issue.

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
Agreed on the clutch, I had horible shuddering on take off and assumed it was just a 'HiLux thing'. New clutch and a decent flywheel machine and it is all sorted. My clutch was slipping as well which is why I changed it, so maybe slam it through the gears under load really quick and see if it slips.
Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
Or just try to take off in second or third, or alternately take off with your foot hard on the brakes,(obviously the intent is for the truck not too move.) if it's gunna slip it'll do it under load.

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
With it shuddering in first does not mean the clutch is gonna slip.
Not saying it isn't slipping but the shudder is caused from a warped fly wheel
I have been through a few clutches in mine over the years, one due to the springs breaking in a 10,000 km old heavy duty clutch. That had the warped fly wheel.
Pull the box off first before you order one and have a look.

Interesting my LN106 shutters on take off and changing back down gears I was putting it down to flogged out shackle bushes but a warped flywheel is also a good posibility as the motor had been hydro locked and bent number 3 con rod when I got it the clutch is a brand new genuine toyota one that would not have done 1000 k yetbrad 93hilux wrote:With it shuddering in first does not mean the clutch is gonna slip.

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
i can understand on where u guys are coming from with the clutch. but it was working fine before i changed the gearbox mount. it was a mount from ebay, so unless its just a cheap shitty mount?

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
I did have a problem once to do with cheap mount bit it only created a vibration at idle, not when you take off.
Bu what you are describing it sounds like the clutch... But may not be

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
i presonaly dont feel it at idle but when i got dad to try it he did say it didnt seem right n my mechanic i got to first look at it said straight away once he started it it was rough at idle. so at this stage im going back to the drawing board and taking out the gearbox mount n comparing it to my old one that was broken to c the difference. when i look at it the box does seem to sit lower then it usually did.
when i changed the gearbox mount i also installed a low profile x member. dont think this would matter tho.

go back to what you had, and do it one step at a time, to make sure you dont leapfrog over the problem.
Keep it simple, it only happened after you did this, so go back to the start, and see if its ok again.

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
when i had these symptoms it was crapped out unis.
$23 to replace each one and smooth as - much cheaper and easier than ripping your gear box out.

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
X2 on the uni's idea. Sounds like cluth shudder symptoms but hearing its only started since the mount and cross member swap i'd be checking uni's. If the gearbox is sitting lower now then uni's will be running at differnt angles...
Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
dam some of these answers are all over the shop arn't they!look mate look into your center bearing and your uni's.leave ya bloody clutch alone you'll jsut create more unnecessary work for yourself.the only reason it is doing it now is because you have a good mount .where as before you couldn't feel it because the mount was taking up the slop etc...i can nar garuntee it is in your tail shaft somewhere and i would be checking that flooged out center bearign your about to replace.
Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
just found the same problem with mine, rear uni was f**ked. have removed rear tailshaft and driving round on fronts until i replace the uni tonight, at least the shuddering has stopped
Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
thanks for the replies. im going to have to look at the unis tommorow arvo. hopefully its them so its a cheap fix.

Re: shuttering in lux. when taking off in 1st
I have had shuddering from day one with my 95 hilux. I had replaced each component and the shuddering would go then come back over time.
The shuddering is slighly different and appears under load in first gear and would go at about 2000 rpm.
Tail shaft uni as they were worn, centre bearing, diff (was completely knackered), Clutch when engine was overhauled, finally the last thing has rid me of the shudder was the gear box rear mount.
All good now 12 months going strong. The centre bearing and uni's seems to go every year but I am hard on them with beach sand etc. Evey though I grease and wash them regularly.
