Upgrading wiring to the starter???

I've heard of people upgrading the wiring to their starters using relays etc... similar to headlight wiring loom upgrades. Is this really necessary? I understand that starters use a helluva lot of juice to get kick the engine over but is the factory loom adequate?

I've already upgraded my headlight loom using my own kit so can easily upgrade the starter loom but wonder if it's really worth it???

If it works fine now there really isn't any point in upgrading. If your cables end up mechanically deteriorating (broken strands, corrosion in the crimp joints) and require replacement then you could go up in size.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I am of the understanding that a starter motor is wired directly to your battery, with it's switchgear integrated in to the starter. So the only real upgrade you can make to the wiring is to replace this cable with a larger gauge. This will help with voltage drop to the starter motor (which is the only real reason for the upgrade, and may give better starts if the existing cable is too small, but why would it be if it is factory) but as for the switchgear integrated into the starter, it should be more than capable of carrying the current it is required to.

In suzukis this circuit is really bad from factory. It is almost a mandatory upgrade if you want a strong kick on your starter. It's a weel documented issue.

Just search clicky starter fix and it'll come up with some options. I did it on my zook and it was amazing how much more power the starter seemed to get.
