One Glow Plug Replaced = new engine!

Tested my glow plugs on the weekend and found that one was fubarred.

replaced it with a Bosch unit ($15 repco) and she starts so much better now.

previously it would blow a crap load of white smoke and miss and carry on for about 20-30 seconds.

now it starts buetifully again. Cant believe the difference it made!.

Reason i suspected a glow plug was because it started much better during summer and i didnt think the engine could have degraded so much so quickly.


is it worth while replacing all the plugs? the others tested fine. All read around the 0.2 ohm mark. Did not think to compare the bosch glob plug's resistance, but figure it would be different anyway being a different brand.

thats all the cost for my hj60 (2H) anyway

the toyota part was $44 making the bosch unbits much more affordable

repco did have a 25% sale on, that would make em $20ea normally.

im sure you can get them cheaper than repco though!

How do you test glow plugs? got a mate with a problem that sounds very similar!

mine are fubared as well, problem is i replaced em with bosch last year (before snow season/) and their buggered again... is it natural to have to spend $120 a year on glowies? all but one is stuffed, i gotta boil the saucepan full of water to start the soab

How do you test glow plugs? got a mate with a problem that sounds very similar!

take the strap off them (strap of copper/brass that connects them all together, voltage rail)

and put a multimeter on each one, they should all ready very similar resistance (ohms).

if they read very large resistance (open circuit) they are fibared

mine all read 0.2 ohms except one which was open circuit (dead).

well my glow plugs have never been replaced until i just did the single one. Thats 14 years of operation without failing..... If the bosch units fail much quicker i guess we can only say you get what you pay for :( Toyota ones may infact be worth it in the long run?

i've been told if you whip out the plug and run it across your batt it should glow like a heater, is this true for 6V plugs in my hj60
