2h deisel blows tonnes of white smoke on start up and dies down after a few laps around the block,

Try new glow plugs, fairly inexpensive to do. I found with mine that they are very sensitve to correct valve clearance, so I'd suggest getting them checked, this eliminated all my hard starting issues along with new engine mounts and it's a different truck.:)

What does the smoke smell like?

White smoke can be raw diesel or water (coolant)

I'd normally agree with glow plugs as the likely culprit, but if it was, the smoke really should totally go away after you get some temp in the engine, so timing could be part of the problem too.
Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.
