12ht oil pickup

Post by mrkjfrmn »

Hi all,
I am currently rebuilding my 12ht, but i am stuck at the reassembly of the oil pump pickup/output pipes... The problem is that the gasket set i have doesn't seem to have any gaskets designed for these flanges, and i'm struggling to remember whether there was a gasket, o ring, or nothing at all there when the motor was pulled down.. Any 12ht guru's know the answer?
I have attached a pic to show what i'm talking about..

Forget about the "O" ring. It does'nt belong in there. I'm almost certain that belongs on you oil cooler. Forget the gasket you have in the picture too, as it's the turbo oil inlet/outlet pipe gasket. There ARE meant to be gaskets in there though. Not sure why you did'nt get any but you could just go down to your local Toyota dealer and pick up the two that are needed. They should only cost a few dollars.

Part number is: 15104C GASKET (FOR OIL STRAINER)
15149-68010 2H, 12HT..HJ6*

If you bought an aftermarket rebuild kit, you probably got a sump gasket with it. I'm not sure why they put that in there but I did'nt use one, nor does Toyota recommend one. Just use sealant on both sides of the crank stiffening plate. I used the "Toyota black sealant". It can be used on any oil or water service.

Hope that helps.

Another thing my memory has me stumped on is whether or not to put in the 2 smaller welch plugs under the side cover on the Inj-pump side.
See the pic below:

The front hole is clean from rust and looks as if a welch plug was previously installed there, but i think the rear hole stays open.. Can anyone confirm??

No worries mate. Always happy to help.

The area your talking about under the injection pump is the engine block side of the oil cooler housing. You will need atleast two holes to be open so that coolant can flow in and over the oil cooler and then out, thereby cooling the oil. Normally there are 5 holes open and only 1 is sealed!!! Can you possibly get a better picture of the welch plugs you have there? The fourth one along I can see is sealed, which is not right. The four large holes are not meant to be plugged, more like restricted. Are all the others plugged aswell? If so, you need to get them out of there. The only one of those holes that is meant to be plugged is the one closest to the right hand side of the picture. The next two along are meant to have 12mm restrictors in there. Then the next two should have 14mm restrictors in them. Then the last one, closest to the left hand side of the picture is meant to be open and un-restricted.

On another note. When your re-assembling the oil cooler (the bit that looks like its 3 thin plates stuck together), it's very important to ensure that it is clean. Try flushing it with clean kero or even warm water. If useing water, make sure after cleaning that you get some oil through it straight after, so you don't get rust in there.

It's also important when bolting the oil cooler to the oil cooler housing that you make sure they are sealed together well. The gasket kit you got should have two gaskets AND two "O" rings to seal it. You need to make sure you do a good job sealing these two joints, as any leak will mean either oil in your water, or water in your oil or a nice combination of both.

If there's anything else I can help you with, let me know.
