airlocker exchange

Post by rustynuts »

Im wondering if someone could tell me if an air locker (arb) out of a bj73 mid wheel base landcruiser 1985 would fit into the rear of a 1994 4.2 litre 80 series. They both have the standard diffs that the factory put in them.
thanks rusty

I took the air locker from the rear of a BJ73 and put it into the rear of a HZJ80 about 4 years ago so the details are a bit sketchy.

When I bought the air locker for the BJ73 and had it installed by ARB, there was something they suggested at purchase time to allow it to be used in an 80 as well as the 73, 40's, 60's etc. I can't remember if it was that there were 2 models that would fit in the 73 but only one that would also fit in the 80 OR that when they fitted it they replaced the carrier bearings with bearing that would fit in an 80 series as well as the 73.

The diff centre is definately interchangeable, just a straight bolt in. The diff ratios are slightly different 4.1 vs 4.11 however it is less than the difference in ratio if you had less worn tyres on teh front than the back of the car.

Take note of are the bolt pattern on the end of the tail shaft attaching to the diff as I think they differ between the BJ73 and the HZJ80?
