CV's in 97 3.5 Dohc - are they that weak!
Although I havn't had our off road very often cause we have the maverick, however I read in the latest 4wd monthly of a guy with one and it said he was snapping cv"s regularly with too much right foot. The the CV's that weak? He was running 285's and I was looking at putting the 285 on ours from the maverick & leave the claws on the mav as I have a company car now and don't need it every day
Yes I was very surprised to read that.
8" HP front diff failures are very rare indeed and I only know of a handfull of failures. The CV's are quite robust so he must have been flogging the absolute crap out of it to break a CV and front diff.
I haven't busted a front CV or diff (even running the Detroit) in 4years of some pretty heavy offroad work including plenty of shockloads.
The CV's are not unbreakable but failure rates are FAR less than the Toyo
IFS.
Lloyd Swartz has only broken 3 in 6 or so years (running a front Detroit and 33"s) of some extreme wheelin. A mate who has a Gen 2 swb 3.0 V6 has owned it since new (13 years) and had a Detroit put in from virtually day 1 has broken about 4 CV's in that time and he wheels hard.
I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless you are gonna apply maximum abuse
